Manowar<\/strong> have reacted to the news that their founding guitarist Ross “The Boss” Friedman<\/strong> has been diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.<\/p>\n

Earlier this week, the band shared a public message via social media, writing: “We heard the terrible news about Ross<\/strong>‘s diagnosis of ALS. We are deeply saddened and are sending him and his family lots of strength during this difficult time.”<\/p>\n

The statement follows confirmation from Friedman<\/strong>‘s publicist that the 72-year-old musician \u2014 also a founding member of influential New York punk-metal trailblazers The Dictators<\/strong> \u2014 was diagnosed after experiencing symptoms over several months.<\/p>\n

“It’s difficult to know what lies ahead, and it crushes me not to be able to play guitar,” Friedman<\/strong> said in a statement. “But the outpouring of love has been so, so strong.”<\/p>\n

He continued: “I’m absolutely blown away by the love and support from family, friends and fans. I love you all.”<\/p>\n

According to the press release, Friedman<\/strong> initially experienced weakness in his hands and legs. Doctors first believed his condition was linked to a series of “very minor strokes,” but dietary changes, exercise and physical therapy “did nothing to slow the progression or increase his strength.” Further testing ultimately led to an ALS diagnosis.<\/p>\n

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is a progressive and currently incurable neurodegenerative disease that attacks motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord, leading to muscle weakness, paralysis and loss of voluntary muscle control.<\/p>\n

Friedman’s legacy in heavy metal is monumental. He recorded six albums with Manowar<\/strong> before departing the band following 1988’s Kings Of Metal. His work helped define the group’s early sound, including classic releases such as Battle Hymns, Into Glory Ride, and Hail To England \u2014 records that cemented Manowar<\/strong>‘s place in metal history.<\/p>\n

As messages of support continue to pour in from across the metal world, Friedman<\/strong>‘s influence and impact remain undeniable, with fans and peers alike rallying around one of the genre’s true pioneers.<\/p>\n
