{"id":583179,"date":"2026-02-11T22:08:10","date_gmt":"2026-02-11T22:08:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/583179\/"},"modified":"2026-02-11T22:08:10","modified_gmt":"2026-02-11T22:08:10","slug":"57-cases-of-measles-confirmed-at-ave-maria-university-7-currently-contagious-collier-county","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/583179\/","title":{"rendered":"57 cases of measles confirmed at Ave Maria University, 7 currently contagious | Collier County"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">AVE MARIA, Fla.\u2014Now 57 cases of Measles have been reported at Ave Maria University, seven of which are contagious, according to the school&#8217;s latest update.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Per their Wednesday, February 11, 9 a.m. update, Ave Maria University nurses have assessed seven students who\u2019ve presented rashes, bringing the total number of cases to 57.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Since the beginning of the semester, 50 nurse-assessed students have progressed beyond the contagious period and now have natural immunity. Note that only five students have been quarantined and are following the 4-day contagious period since their rashes were reported.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Department of Health is set to release an updated lab diagnostic test case numbers on its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flhealthcharts.gov\/ChartsReports\/rdPage.aspx?rdReport=FrequencyMerlin.Frequency\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">website<\/a> on Thursday, and Ave Maria University will provide regular updates as they occur.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">WINK News initially reported on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winknews.com\/news\/collier\/measles-outbreak-at-ave-maria-collier-county-health-on-high-alert\/article_0b36be5f-f0fb-4a9c-9803-69b06b8cad50.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">measles outbreak at Ave Maria University in early February,<\/a> where students and locals expressed concern that the disease would spread beyond the university.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;We weren&#8217;t concerned about getting measles. We&#8217;ve been vaccinated,&#8221; said Stephen Keresztes, a tourist from Oregon.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Measles is highly contagious and causes symptoms similar to those of the common cold, including red, swollen eyes, a runny nose, a cough, and a rash.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;For someone who&#8217;s never been vaccinated, if they&#8217;re in a room with someone with measles, there&#8217;s over a 90% chance they will contract measles,&#8221; said Charles Callahan, interim director of the Infection Control Program at Lee Health.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.avemaria.edu\/campus-health-update\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a press statement<\/a> from Ave Maria University, \u201cPer DOH guidance, campus operations continue, including in-person classes; Masses and confessions; dining services; and noncurricular activities.
