(ABC News: Matt Roberts)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It implemented a gag on abortion debate in parliament shortly after coming into power.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">On Tuesday, <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2026-02-10\/nigel-dalton-crosses-floor-opposing-lnp-abortion-debate-ban\/106327032\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/106327032\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mr Dalton voted for a motion to overturn that gag, moved by the Katter&#8217;s Australian Party, which ultimately failed without the support of the government.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Where to find help:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Speaking briefly to the media afterwards, he said it was a &#8220;deeply personal decision&#8221; but wouldn&#8217;t elaborate further.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Dalton then sat down for an 11-minute interview on YouTube.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;My regret is I didn&#8217;t stand up earlier, and I ask God for forgiveness for that,&#8221; Mr Dalton said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I should have stood up in the campaign. I probably voted for the gag order, but that was naivety as well as not understanding parliamentary process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I&#8217;m not blaming anybody for that. (ABC News: Alex Brewster)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He said it was time to &#8220;redeem himself&#8221; in the &#8220;eyes of God&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;That&#8217;s who I serve, I don&#8217;t serve anyone else. I obviously understand the leadership of the LNP. It&#8217;s going to be a difficult time for them to manage this.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-10-10\/qld-abortion-analysis-kap-election-debate\/104450992\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Did a minor party just make abortion an election issue?<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Less than a decade after abortion was decriminalised, the debate this time would be about whether to reinstate it as a criminal offence, writes Matt Eaton.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">He conceded many people in his seat would consider defying his party as &#8220;the worst decision&#8221; he had ever made.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;But I know that there are plenty of people in Mackay who&#8217;s going to say thank you, you stood up for what is right.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Abortion was decriminalised in 2018 by the former Labor government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">At the time, Mr Crisafulli voted against it, with current Health Minister Tim Nicholls and Customer Services Minister Steve Minnikin two of just three LNP members voting for the change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In state parliament, opposition leader Steven Miles tabled an email that Cherish Life, an anti-abortion organisation, said it received from Oodgeroo MP Amanda Stoker.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The email notes the government made a pre-election commitment it would not change abortion laws &#8220;in this term&#8221; .<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Cherish Life CEO Matt Cliff has said the member for Oodgeroo told him changes to abortion law could come next term.
