{"id":58406,"date":"2025-07-12T02:05:20","date_gmt":"2025-07-12T02:05:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/58406\/"},"modified":"2025-07-12T02:05:20","modified_gmt":"2025-07-12T02:05:20","slug":"wasserman-schultz-house-democrats-decry-health-cuts-in-gop-tax-law-during-town-hall-in-new-orleans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/58406\/","title":{"rendered":"Wasserman Schultz, House Democrats decry health cuts in GOP tax law during town hall in New Orleans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South Florida Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz joined other top House Democrats at a Louisiana town hall Thursday night to preview one of the party\u2019s strategies for attempting to retake the U.S. House next year, ripping into the health care changes in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-sign-tax-cut-bill-july-4-3804df732e461a626fd8c2b43413c3f0\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">just-passed Republican tax and spending bill<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Wasserman Schultz, D-Weston, said Thursday&#8217;s event was \u201cstep one\u201d in Democrats&#8217; strategy to \u201cmake sure people are aware of what they\u2019re losing and who took it away from them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As co-chair of the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee, she holds a top leadership role within the party.<\/p>\n<p>She blasted President Trump\u2019s tax and spending law \u2014 what he called the \u201cBig, Beautiful Bill&#8221; \u2014 saying it strips health care coverage from 17 million Americans, including almost 2 million in Florida and 90,000 in her congressional district that includes much of Broward County.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will force people into that horrible decision,\u201d she said. \u201cDo I pay a big doctor bill to see a doctor now? Or do I wait and pay an even bigger bill in an emergency room later? And for many, that won&#8217;t even be a choice, now that the big ugly bill is law, because they won&#8217;t be able to pay.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>She said the bill pushed by Trump and approved by Republicans, who control the House and Senate, cuts food assistance funds \u201cfrom millions of kids, seniors, and veterans just to pay for their tax scam.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She called it a scam because Americans earning $50,000 or less will see their tax bills reduced by $247, while the wealthiest of Americans \u2014 those representing less than 1% of the country \u2014 will see an average benefit of more than $300,000.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is obscene,\u201d said Wasserman Schultz.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis [law] makes life less affordable and more painful,\u201d she said. :When history looks back on this bill, its legacy will be Trump lied and people died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The top House Democrat,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/hakeem-jeffries\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Hakeem Jeffries<\/a>, said the event in the home state of House Speaker Mike Johnson was the first stop on a nationwide tour to educate voters about the bill, which he called \u201can all-out assault against the American people.\u201d He also noted that Republicans had promised not to touch Medicaid, the government health insurance program for lower-income Americans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd during the first chance they got, they do the exact opposite,\u201d Jeffries told a crowd of several hundred at Xavier University in New Orleans. \u201cShame on them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The gathering of some of the top House Democrats comes at a crucial time for the party. It is seeking a pathway back to power in Washington but is grappling for a message that will resonate with the working-class voters who have migrated toward Republicans in recent elections.<\/p>\n<p>Democratic leaders believe the bill, which President Donald Trump signed into law on the Fourth of July,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/democrats-trump-big-beautiful-bill-politics-ce474a3f5c9cf79cff61b51d2bdfbaab\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">will sway voters<\/a>\u00a0ahead of the 2026 midterms, when Democrats look to win control of the House and break the hold Republicans have on the levers of power in Washington.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/what-is-republican-trump-tax-bill-f65be44e1050431a601320197322551b\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">measure<\/a>\u00a0includes about $4.5 trillion in tax breaks by extending cuts made during Trump\u2019s first term, mostly benefiting the wealthiest Americans, and adding new ones that include no taxes on tips. It also slashes clean energy tax credits and unleashes hundreds of billions of dollars for Trump\u2019s national security agenda, including for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/supreme-court-immigration-law-florida-63a74b4c1328da28b085cdaae2d2543d\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">border patrol and deportations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Congressional Budget Office\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbo.gov\/publication\/61534\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">estimates<\/a>\u00a011.8 million adults and children are at risk of losing their health insurance under the bill, which over time will make it harder to enroll in federal health care programs, including Medicaid and others created by President\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/obamacare-aca-health-care-coverage-biden-trump-0c73dcde4a19aea65cb83de01f2d5d2e\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Barack Obama\u2019s<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/obamacare-affordable-care-act-harris-trump-kamala-9ac518845f3fd085bc68dcceed16b2c1\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" data-cms-ai=\"0\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Affordable Care Act<\/a>. Additionally, it estimated 3 million Americans will no longer qualify for food stamps, also known as SNAP benefits.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation reduces federal Medicaid spending by $1 trillion.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats chose Louisiana as the site of their town hall to highlight the impact of those cuts.
