Joanna Gaines Says \u2018I Kind of Feel Like I\u2019m Losing a Friend\u2019<\/p>\n

In a July 2025 interview with People<\/a> for their special edition \u201cChip & Joanna Gaines: Their Next Chapter,\u201d the couple discussed their children leaving home.<\/p>\n

\u201cElla, our second kiddo, she\u2019s graduating this year, so we\u2019re going through that again with another kid leaving the nest and trying to stay emotionally stable,\u201d Joanna shared.<\/p>\n

Chip Gaines asked her, \u201cDo you think this is going to be harder [than with Drake?].\u201d<\/p>\n

Joanna noted that it will be harder for her, explaining, \u201cI think there\u2019s an emotional difference.\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued, \u201cWith Ella, we love to go to antiques shops, plant shops and go get coffee \u2014 that\u2019s our rhythm. I kind of feel like I\u2019m losing a friend in my everyday life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Joanna added, \u201cIt feels like what\u2019s coming this summer will be a tidal wave of emotions, and I am not going to brace; I\u2019m going to stand there and take it with him.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s an exciting time for their daughter, who is looking forward to going to college and finding her own path.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s excited about going somewhere and just being known for her,\u201d Joanna said. \u201cShe\u2019s like, \u2018I don\u2019t want anyone knowing that you\u2019re \u2026 I just want to go and be myself.’\u201d<\/p>\n

She added, \u201cI\u2019m excited for her to learn. She\u2019s about to see some stuff. She\u2019s going to teach us stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chip & Joanna Gaines Enjoy Intentional Family Time<\/p>\n

Joanna also told People<\/a> how the whole family is exploring intentional time together outside of their lives at home.<\/p>\n

\u201cTruth is, we\u2019re all homebodies,\u201d she said. \u201cBut as our kids get older, I\u2019ve learned what a gift it is to get away and have that intentional time as a family.\u201d<\/p>\n

Joanna explained, \u201cBeing present is what we\u2019re after \u2014 so we limit phones, pick a few games or hikes that everyone is excited about, eat together for every meal and toss the schedule out the window.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Magnolia empire owners also focus on normalcy for their kids, but that\u2019s not always easy.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re so young and we want to give them the chance to have\u00a0a normal childhood,\u201d Joanna explained. \u201cWhen we wake up in the morning, I think we\u2019re normal. But then you go to Target and it\u2019s definitely different. We\u2019re both in awe.\u201d<\/p>\n
