Final results have not yet been announced by the Election Commission, though several local media outlets reported the party\u2019s win.<\/p>\n<p>BNP is headed by <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/bangladesh-tarique-rahman-exile-return-son-18f3054e735e580d18c41fb04bf5156d\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tarique Rahman<\/a>, its prime ministerial candidate. Rahman, 60, returned to Bangladesh in December after 17 years in self-exile in London. He is the son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, who died in December.<\/p>\n<p>Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, senior joint secretary-general of the BNP, extended congratulations to the people of Bangladesh on the party\u2019s electoral victory in a statement. Separately, Saleh Shibly, press secretary to Rahman, said the BNP leader called on his supporters to hold special prayers alongside the weekly Friday service and not to hold any celebratory processions.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Embassy in Dhaka congratulated Rahman and his party on the win, calling it a \u201chistoric victory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe United States looks forward to working with you to achieve shared goals of prosperity and security for both our countries,\u201d U.S. Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T Christensen wrote on X.<\/p>\n<p>The contest was largely a two-way race between the BNP and an 11-party alliance led by the Islamist <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/bangladesh-islamist-hasina-yunus-7bcf60910c94bef1730d0c8d62f22883\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jamaat-e-Islami<\/a>, a conservative religious party whose growing influence has fueled concern, particularly among women and <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/bangladesh-election-hindu-minority-attacks-b44be9ebdabacbfb3392074214e0e3f7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">minority communities<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Shafiqur Rahman, who heads Jamaat-e-Islami, secured a seat in Dhaka and is poised to become the opposition leader in Parliament. But his party voiced objections to the handling of the election results. <\/p>\n<p>The party\u2019s assistant secretary-general, Ahsanul Mahboob Zubair, said the Election Commission had delayed announcing results in several constituencies, calling the holdups \u201cunusual.\u201d In a statement posted on Facebook, the party also claimed that candidates from the alliance it heads were \u201cnarrowly and suspiciously losing\u201d in multiple areas.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/bangladesh-election-muhammad-yunus-referendum-democracy-15d3410b554d34d60eea7d2557535713\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Thursdays\u2019 vote<\/a> took place amid tight security and <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/bangladesh-dhaka-election-democracy-22cfdd93c6e111db4c55b16c382266a5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">concerns of democratic backsliding,<\/a> rising political violence and the fraying of the rule of law. <\/p>\n<p>The election was the first since a bloody student-led revolt in July 2024 led to the ouster of previous Prime Minister <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/sheikh-hasina\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sheikh Hasina<\/a>, sending her to <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/bangladesh-sheikh-hasina-prime-minister-fc19afbef9d1c50aaef08648bf37437f\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">exile in India<\/a>. Many viewed it as a crucial test of Bangladesh\u2019s ability restore trust in democracy and to transform public protests into tangible political reform.<\/p>\n<p>For much of the past 15 years, the BNP languished in opposition, boycotting several elections and accusing Hasina\u2019s government of systematic vote rigging and political repression. Tarique Rahman himself spent 17 years in self-imposed exile after Hasina\u2019s government pursued multiple corruption and criminal cases against him. He has denied the charges, saying they were politically motivated. <\/p>\n<p>Those cases were dropped after Hasina\u2019s government collapsed, paving the way for his return to Bangladesh. His campaign has cast him as a defender of democracy in a country whose politics have long been shaped by entrenched parties, military interventions, and allegations of electoral manipulation.<\/p>\n<p>Tarique Rahman\u2019s BNP has for decades formed one half of the country\u2019s entrenched dynastic political system.
