He committed seven turnovers without registering an assist. The rookie took only seven shots and missed both of his free-throw attempts.

“I’m disappointed,” Essengue said. “That’s my first game. But I just have to take in. I can just get better right now. That just gives me more confidence.”

This wasn’t just a debut to the Bulls fan base. Essengue also was trying to make a strong impression on his new franchise. Teammates Isaac Okoro, Ayo Dosunmu, Kevin Huerter and Coby White lined the courtside seats at Cox Pavilion to watch their newest teammates. Executive vice president of basketball operations Artūras Karnišovas, general manager Marc Eversley and coach Billy Donovan took in the game from the baseline.

Summer league typically follows the same plot — watch a lot of young guys play some fairly mediocre basketball, then overreact accordingly. And struggling in summer league is rarely a source of true concern. (For instance, No. 1 pick Cooper Flagg went 5-for-21 on Thursday in his first game with the Dallas Mavericks.)

So what can be taken away from Essengue’s debut in Las Vegas?

The No. 12 pick looked young and inexperienced. Neither should come as a surprise. He’s 18 with barely a week of NBA practices under his belt. The Bulls don’t expect the rookie to be ready for a major role at the start of this season — or, necessarily, even by the end of it. But Friday night’s game suggested that Essengue is even further from earning substantial minutes in the Bulls rotation.

In moments of pressure, Essengue showed his discomfort. He dribbled the ball off his foot while attempting to blow by a defender on a behind-the-back cut in the second quarter. Minutes later, he attempted to progress the ball in transition and drove straight into a double team, crashing into a defender and turning the ball over again. While attempting to corral a defensive rebound, he accidentally swatted the ball into the basket.

Essengue found a little more comfort as the game wore on. He found some rhythm on defense, jumping into passing lanes to create a few deflections. In the third quarter, he launched himself skyward to smack away a shot with one hand, triggering a transition drive for the Bulls. He found his preferred shooting spots twice in the first quarter — flushing a transition dunk, then sinking a 3-pointer.

Noa Essengue’s family is never far away — even with the Chicago Bulls rookie halfway across the world

But even with those brief highlights, the game ultimately was defined by what the rookie still has to learn. He regularly underestimated the speed and physicality of defenders. His shots did not fall at the rim. And he struggled to hunt down loose balls, logging fewer rebounds than 5-foot-8 guard Yuki Kawamura.

“I need to improve everything — my dribble, my shooting skills, my go to the basket,” Essengue said. “I missed a lot of shots, I did a lot of turnovers.”

Friday’s game also gave a first glimpse of how Essengue pairs with second-year forward Matas Buzelis, the No. 11 pick in 2024. Buzelis won a starting role by the end of his rookie season and is expected to start again this year. He had 17 points and five rebounds against the Raptors in the first of his two summer league outings, the latter of which will take place Monday against the Indiana Pacers.

Essengue and Buzelis may be billed as similar players — even by the Bulls front office — but they carry starkly different builds. Buzelis might be a more lean version of a forward, but even as a rookie he looked comfortable in his body, possessing a bouncy explosiveness around the basket that defined his strength as a dunker.

In comparison, Essengue is a bit more gangly, still growing into his hands and feet with a plodding stride. This physical awkwardness reflects the rookie’s relative youth. A year might not seem like much of a difference, but the gap between 18 and 19 is quite wide — especially for a 6-10 forward who still has quite a bit of his frame to fill out.

Their game is also noticeably different. With Essengue on the court, Buzelis shifted over to the 3 to shoulder a heftier load of ballhandling responsibilities, which afforded the Bulls more length at the perimeter. With the advantage of a year in the NBA in his favor, Buzelis showed a much higher ability to handle the ball in traffic. The pair found few opportunities to create for one another as Essengue took a more reactive approach on the offensive end.

Buzelis encouraged the rookie after the loss, emphasizing that stars such as Giannis Antetokounmpo struggled heavily in their summer league debuts in a standard learning experience.

“These games come so fast, you’ve got to have a short memory,” Buzelis said. “I always tell him, ‘You’re great. You’re going to be great. So you’ve got to work on just moving onto the next play.’ Next-play mentality every time.”

Summer league offers little time to obsess over a bad game. The Bulls will play on the same court less than 24 hours later with a Saturday night game against the Sacramento Kings.

How Essengue responds to a lukewarm first outing will give Bulls fans more fuel — or, perhaps, a slight deterrent — for overreaction.

Originally Published: July 11, 2025 at 11:01 PM CDT

LAS VEGAS — For NBA rookies, summer league is all about first impressions.
