College professors have called the increased restrictions an attack on academic freedom. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The policy proposal does not define what is considered a \u201ccontroversial\u201d or \u201ccontested\u201d topic. They would also have to tweak required general education courses so that students do not have to \u201cstudy unnecessary controversial subjects.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The face of Texas higher education is transforming under a new law that gives regents, who are appointed by Gov. Greg Abbott, more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/education\/2025\/11\/17\/texas-public-universities-face-more-state-oversight-under-new-law-heres-what-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/education\/2025\/11\/17\/texas-public-universities-face-more-state-oversight-under-new-law-heres-what-to-know\/\">power over the day-to-day functions of universities<\/a>. Any courses taught on its campuses must be \u201caligned with the direction and priorities of the Board of Regents,\u201d according to a statement sent to The Dallas Morning News in September. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">A UT spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment on the status of the review, which was still underway in December. <\/p>\n<p>Related<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"aspect-ratio:190 \/ 127\" class=\"dmnc_features-article-body-embeds-related-story-module__2UraD flex-none object-cover dmnc_images-modern-image-module__QFaG- max-w-full h-auto text-white dmnc_images-modern-image-module__9Zlll bg-gray-light object-contain dmnc_images-modern-image-module__P3kZ4 w-full\" width=\"190\" height=\"127\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/STYJROAWNNEHNPNLCFPCXCW7M4.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Individual institutions across the system are also conducting reviews of courses, programs and departments. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">UT Austin, the system\u2019s flagship institution, moved to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/news\/education\/article\/ut-consolidates-ethnic-gender-studies-21349460.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/news\/education\/article\/ut-consolidates-ethnic-gender-studies-21349460.php\">consolidate its ethnic and gender studies departments<\/a> this week following a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/news\/education\/article\/ut-ethnic-studies-austin-consolidation-21126972.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/news\/education\/article\/ut-ethnic-studies-austin-consolidation-21126972.php\">review of overly \u201cfractured\u201d departments <\/a>that began last fall. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">UT Arlington is currently conducting a review of its 180 undergraduate and master\u2019s degree programs.
