JACKSONVILLE, Fla. \u2014 An urgent safety alert sent Wednesday at the University of North Florida is raising questions among students about timing and transparency.<\/p>\n
The alert was about a sexual assault near the Eco Adventure Trail.<\/p>\n
>>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<<<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n The alleged assault happened on Feb. 2. <\/p>\n University officials said it was reported to UNF police Tuesday night, the 11th, and the campus community was notified the following day on the 12th.<\/p>\n UNF student Ethan McCaffery said, \u201cThey reported it February 11, and it happened February 2. So I\u2019m not really sure what else could\u2019ve happened.\u201d<\/p>\n Blue emergency call boxes line the campus, and parts of the wooded Eco Adventure Trail \u2014 visible reminders of campus safety. But for some students, the recent alert has shaken their sense of security.<\/p>\n UNF police said patrols have increased around campus since the report.<\/p>\n UNF student Alexandria Yeschenko said she noticed a heightened law enforcement presence earlier this week.<\/p>\n \u201cEarlier this week there was highway patrol here, and then we had four units over there,\u201d Yeschenko said. \u201cBut I thought it was weird because the Eco Trail just got closed from a fire.\u201d<\/p>\n Yeschenko said timely communication is critical for students trying to make decisions about their safety.<\/p>\n \u201cI heard about this yesterday, but they didn\u2019t release a whole lot of information,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n [DOWNLOAD: <\/b>Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks<\/b><\/a>]<\/b><\/p>\n She added that limited details are not uncommon.<\/p>\n \u201cIt depends on the situation. We don\u2019t always get the details.
