{"id":590272,"date":"2026-02-14T21:33:15","date_gmt":"2026-02-14T21:33:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/590272\/"},"modified":"2026-02-14T21:33:15","modified_gmt":"2026-02-14T21:33:15","slug":"theres-one-simple-method-to-lower-alcohol-intake-and-it-works-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/590272\/","title":{"rendered":"There&#8217;s One Simple Method to Lower Alcohol Intake, And It Works : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Scientists have discovered an effective method for getting people to drink less alcohol, research suggests.<\/p>\n<p>By highlighting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/alcohol-damages-dna-stem-cells-cancer-acetaldehyde\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">the increased risk of cancer<\/a> that comes with imbibing, and pairing that with counting each and every drink, it&#8217;s possible to reduce alcohol intake.<\/p>\n<p>In a study of almost 8,000 people published in 2021, researchers found this particular combination of &#8216;why to reduce&#8217; and &#8216;how to reduce&#8217; messaging can be useful for promoting good health in a population.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Telling people alcohol causes  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/cancer\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73077\" data-postid=\"192420\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">cancer<\/a> is just part of the solution \u2013 we also need to give them ways to take action to reduce their risk,&#8221; economist and consumer psychologist Simone Pettigrew from The George Institute for Global Health in Australia <a href=\"https:\/\/www.georgeinstitute.org\/media-releases\/cancer-a-compelling-reason-to-cut-alcohol-and-drink-counting-helps\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">explained<\/a> when the findings were announced.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/7-3-months-without-alcohol-lets-brains-repair-damage-from-heavy-drinking-study-finds\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Too much drinking<\/a> doesn&#8217;t just lead to cancer, of course. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/there-may-be-no-safe-amount-of-booze-when-it-comes-to-dementia-risk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Overdoing it on the booze<\/a> is associated with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-reveal-what-alcohol-is-doing-to-your-sleep\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">whole range<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/alcohol-can-trigger-serious-cardiac-effects-in-young-people\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">of problems<\/a>, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/global-burden-of-disease-alcohol-assessment-global-death-disability-rate\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">premature death<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/alcohol-can-trigger-serious-cardiac-effects-in-young-people\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">heart disease<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/vicious-cycle-revealed-how-alcohol-helps-gut-bacteria-attack-your-liver\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">digestive issues<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/drinking-until-you-pass-out-linked-to-doubled-risk-of-dementia-giant-study-reveals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">an increased risk of dementia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For the study, three surveys were filled out: 7,995 people completed the first, 4,588 of those people completed the second three weeks later, and 2,687 people finished the final survey three weeks after that.<\/p>\n<p>The participants were split up into different groups and shown different advertisements and messages about drinking.<\/p>\n<p>One combination stood out, compared to a control group: A TV ad linking alcohol and cancer, together with a suggestion to keep count of your drinks, was one of the most effective at getting people to try and cut down on alcohol intake.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/PeopleEatingDrinkingWine642.jpg\" alt=\"Two young women eating pizza and drinking wine\" width=\"642\" height=\"500\" class=\"size-full wp-image-137378\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Researchers discovered an effective way to encourage people to drink less alcohol. (Adrienn\/Pexels)<\/p>\n<p>It was also the only combination where people actually did significantly reduce their alcohol consumption over the six weeks.<\/p>\n<p>Other approaches \u2013 like encouraging people to decide on a number of drinks and then stick to it \u2013 did prompt some of the volunteers to try and cut down, but there was a clear winner based on the people taking part in this research.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/these-are-the-key-takeaways-in-the-new-us-alcohol-cancer-guidelines\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Many people don&#8217;t know that alcohol is a carcinogen<\/a>. It&#8217;s important information that drinkers should have access to,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.georgeinstitute.org\/media-releases\/cancer-a-compelling-reason-to-cut-alcohol-and-drink-counting-helps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">said Pettigrew<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We found that pairing information about alcohol and cancer with a particular practical action \u2013 counting their drinks \u2013 resulted in drinkers reducing the amount of alcohol they consumed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/newsletter?utm_source=promo_octopus_black\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Octopus-black-final-642x272.jpg\" alt=\"Subscribe to ScienceAlert's free fact-checked newsletter\" width=\"642\" height=\"272\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-190933 size-medium\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Alcohol consumption can be attributed to as many as 7 percent of premature deaths worldwide, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/publications\/i\/item\/9789241565639\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">according to the World Health Organization<\/a>, and making drinkers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/moderate-drinking-is-not-good-for-you-after-all-study-finds\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">more aware<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/drinking-alcohol-before-hitting-the-sauna-could-be-a-deadly-combo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the health risks<\/a> is one way of tackling that problem.<\/p>\n<p>While health agencies have also looked at ways of making booze less readily available and more expensive, ultimately, personal choices will determine whether or not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/experts-explain-what-drinking-while-on-medication-can-do-to-your-body\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">behavior<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/drinking-alcohol-on-planes-may-pose-a-hidden-danger-heres-why\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">around alcohol<\/a> will shift in the long term.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/pexels-thongtran95-14448570-642x429.jpg\" alt=\"Different hands holding drinks\" width=\"642\" height=\"429\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-146115\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Overdoing it on the booze is associated with a whole range of problems.
