Yard signs blaring \u201cNo! Project Marvel\u201d are part of a \u201cgrassroots effort to derail the development of the city of San Antonio\u2019s\u202fproposed downtown sports and entertainment district<\/a> at Hemisfair, a\u202fmultibillion-dollar undertaking that staff\u202finitially code-named Project Marvel,” according to Smith & Iszler of the SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS. Smith wrote opponents object to constructing the arena, the district\u2019s \u201cpotential crown jewel, on the public dime.<\/a>\u201d They say they are \u201cworried the area will become a Disneyland for tourists rather than a hub for locals.\u201d Some residents of nearby neighborhoods\u202fare concerned \u201cabout traffic gridlock.\u201d Longtime homeowner in the nearby area, Anne Alexander, is \u201cspearheading a newly-formed coalition called \u2018No! Project Marvel.\u2019\u201d The coalition is \u201cjoining a much bigger and older organization in opposing Project Marvel.\u201d COPS\/Metro Alliance, a \u201cprominent interfaith community group,\u202ffirst came out against the district in December.\u201d It is currently \u201ccollecting signatures from voters who commit to rejecting any ballot measures that seek to use city or county dollars for the project.\u201d The organization\u2019s leaders are \u201cknocking on doors\u201d and talking to parishioners at their \u201c32 member churches and nonprofits.\u201d COPS\/Metro aims to collect \u201ctens of thousands of signatures\u201d from registered voters in opposition of the project. People have also \u201cvoiced their skepticism at\u202fa series of community workshops on the proposed district organized by\u202fcity.\u201d Project Marvel has \u201cplenty of supporters,\u201d including some who attended the workshops.
