\n\tThe Onion<\/a> published a full page ad in the New York Times<\/a> mocking the \u201ccowardice\u201d of Congress in the face of the Trump administration\u2019s \u201cgrowing assaults on essential liberties.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tA printed copy of the satirical paper\u2019s editorial<\/a> \u2014 which was planned even before Trump dropped a \u201cpayload of bombs<\/a>\u201d on Iran without Congress\u2019 authorization \u2014 was also delivered to every member of Congress, the Handbasket reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cMembers of Congress\u2014now, more than ever, our nation desperately needs your cowardice,\u201d the editorial states. \u201cWe teeter on the brink of collapse into an authoritarian state. That is why, today, The Onion calls upon our lawmakers to sit back and do absolutely nothing. Now is not the time for bravery or valor! This is the time for protecting your own hide and lining your pocket. Now is not the time for listening to your idiotic constituents drone on about what\u2019s happening to their precious democracy. This is the time for getting down on all fours and groveling.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn an open letter<\/a> accompanying the editorial, Bryce P. Tetraeder, the faux CEO of the Onion\u2019s parent company Global Tetrahedron, celebrated Congress\u2019 inactivity. \u201cAs a titan of business, I find this nation\u2019s descent into corruption and tyranny not simply a balm for my soul, but also a huge benefit to my bottom line,\u201d Tetraeder wrote. \u201cWe are on the precipice of a new economic order, one in which affluent men like myself will be able to select their own tax rate from a drop-down menu. It\u2019s a reality I barely dreamed possible just a few months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSpeaking to the Handbasket, the Onion\u2019s actual CEO Ben Collins said of the stunt, \u201cThe Onion is known for its oracular ability to predict the next great American horror, but the timing on this might be the most prescient bit of The Onion\u2019s reporting yet. As the president drags this country headlong into yet another war, which will certainly bring about no adverse consequences, I am proud to reiterate The Onion\u2019s call for Congress to sit back and just let this all happen to us.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Onion\u2019s editorial board \u2014 signees include the Unabomber Ted Kaczynski, hockey legend Joe Sakic, and Benedict Arnold \u2014 concluded their editorial, \u201cLet this be the moment to make amends for any missteps of American bravery and valor. Congress, we are asking, nay, demanding: This coming Independence Day, don\u2019t wave the Stars and Stripes, that enduring symbol of liberty and rebellion.
