At least, that was the expectation roughly a decade ago with the arrival of the Oculus Rift, the first virtual reality (VR) headset that many believed would push VR into the mainstream.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcxs0qyg00023b6oadd4fxl0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In 2025, the industry has failed to deliver on that promise. But tech and entertainment giants alike believe that moment could be closer than ever.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcxs0qyg00033b6opzmrhmve@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The evidence is there. The Wall Street Journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/business\/media\/meta-seeks-hollywood-deals-for-new-virtual-reality-headset-ef3db942?gaa_at=eafs&amp;gaa_n=ASWzDAg7jV7InXcRpZZXMb659p2ZGFRGM3Z0Zr3pKJHG6N0T1JjbvtgEKNE5_ELLKA%3D%3D&amp;gaa_ts=686fd114&amp;gaa_sig=_j2ju7UMe7db3UO9uPgxorMnWTJb6Mo8Ir17F5LCM9xuZ3kZ4W2g2sCCCWFHG0-BmiPOIwrZy8it__ksO0xHAQ%3D%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">reported<\/a> last month that Meta is in talks with Disney, A24 and other entertainment companies to produce immersive content for its Quest VR headsets. Apple announced an update to its Vision Pro headset in June, enabling users to share content with other headsets \u2014 ideal for watching movies together in 3-D. Earlier this year, Apple also launched an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/newsroom\/2025\/03\/apple-unveils-immersive-concert-experience-with-metallica-for-apple-vision-pro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">immersive Metallica concert<\/a> for the Vision Pro and announced in July it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-07-09\/apple-readies-first-upgrade-to-its-struggling-vision-pro-headset?sref=0h3tD0ig\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">readying its first upgrade<\/a> to boost the Vision Pro\u2019s performance.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcxs0qyg00043b6orfxjirz3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Taken together, this signals that tech and media behemoths are still betting that consumers will be willing to spend hundreds, if not thousands, to experience concerts, movies and sporting events beyond the confines of a traditional screen.\n    <\/p>\n<p>        A chicken-and-the-egg paradox<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcxs0qyg00053b6o4o0y85p0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the 10-plus years since Oculus debuted the Rift, headset manufacturers have produced lighter, more powerful devices. Meanwhile, companies are finally warming to the idea of another medium for storytelling.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcxs0qyg00073b6oldre7aa2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Tech companies have a history of flirting with VR projects aimed at mainstream users. In June, Meta offered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.meta.com\/blog\/stanley-cup-2025-xtadium\/?srsltid=AfmBOoqB-UCcmjVVlJFRBzk2FfuRCcopLD-mkeJcxv2EspWTxf02DGPJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">live virtual rinkside tickets<\/a> to Stanley Cup games, echoing previous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.meta.com\/quest\/nba-wnba\/?srsltid=AfmBOoqEw75pSVXWcuBJPRU32mx3WCVxdQGBNaCm7HBOpxhwfEkWMpaR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NBA and WNBA<\/a> offerings. Headset owners have attended <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/02\/27\/tech\/vr-live-music-intl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">virtual concerts<\/a> for years, including Apple\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/tv.apple.com\/us\/movie\/alicia-keys-rehearsal-room\/umc.cmc.t9iydetu9oavhk8i00qvduup\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">immersive Alicia Keys session<\/a> and Meta\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oculus.com\/experiences\/event\/993433791717337\/?srsltid=AfmBOorIvkvHaslWCrTbzi6Pk7lrjgoCnUkCmXdPd4dKBpoZuE3_aisM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Blackpink show<\/a>. Disney even launched a <a href=\"https:\/\/thewaltdisneycompany.com\/disney-apple-vision-pro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Disney+ app for Apple\u2019s Vision Pro<\/a> on Day 1 in 2024.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcz16abf0000356n2suohslz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But these have been pilots to gauge interest, not long-term investments. Historically, headsets have been trapped in a chicken-and-egg paradox: to woo entertainment content, they need mass adoption; but to reach that scale, headsets need premium content.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcz172pp0007356n69iq3f8u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The technology must also be comfortable, powerful and popular enough to gain mass appeal. For Sarah Malkin, director of entertainment content for Meta\u2019s VR division Reality Labs, that cycle is already being broken.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcz172pp0008356npqhjmh0q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI think the \u2018it moment\u2019 is when you are regularly engaging in experiences in mixed reality that are super complementary and part of your integrated life,\u201d Malkin told CNN. \u201cTo me, that\u2019s already happening.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcz172pp0009356nur28ibmu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Global shipments of augmented reality (AR) and VR headsets increased by around 10% in 2024 to 7.5 million and nearly 30.8% to 3.4 million in the US, according to IDC, a global market intelligence and data company. Although IDC predicts shipments around the world will tumble this year due to delayed product launches, it expects a massive rebound in 2026 with worldwide shipments surging 98.5% to 11.3 million.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcz172pp000a356n0ouzmw0o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, the results haven\u2019t always lived up to the hype. Mark Zuckerberg\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2021\/oct\/28\/facebook-mark-zuckerberg-meta-metaverse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Metaverse<\/a> has cost Meta <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/articles\/meta-platforms-has-spent-$46-billion-on-the-metaverse-since-2021-but-its-spending-twice-as\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">$46 billion over three years<\/a>. Reality Labs, the company\u2019s VR division, posted $4.2 billion in operating loss and just $412 million in sales <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/04\/30\/metas-reality-labs-posts-4point2-billion-loss-in-first-quarter.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">in Q1<\/a>, down from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/01\/29\/metas-reality-labs-posts-5-billion-loss-in-fourth-quarter.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the previous quarter<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcz172pp000b356nwg1tnuti@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But tech giants continue to experiment with the technology. Meta invested <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-07-08\/meta-invests-3-5-billion-in-essilorluxottica-in-ai-glasses-push?srnd=phx-technology&amp;sref=0h3tD0ig\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">$3.5 billion <\/a>in eyewear manufacturer EssilorLuxottica SA to bolster its AI spectacle gambit, according to Bloomberg. (A Meta spokesperson declined to comment on the report.) Snap recently said it plans to launch new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/snapchat\/684131\/snap-specs-ar-glasses-2026-release\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">augmented reality spectacles<\/a> next year, and Google continues to work with partners like Xreal and Samsung on upcoming headsets and glasses that run on its new Android XR software. Slow growth can be partially attributed to incorrect assumptions by studios.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcxs0qyg000i3b6o0wok1242@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cYou can\u2019t just take the flat version of what you put on Disney+ or Netflix or Amazon, and just throw that up,\u201d Jenna Seiden, an industry consultant and adviser who has worked with Skydance Media, Niantic, CAA, and Xbox, told CNN. \u201cYou need to build natively so the audience is going to have a different experience per platform.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcxs0qyg000j3b6ov4qyalh2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While creating media for virtual and mixed reality may seem like a departure from developing content for 2-D screens, Seiden says the secret to success is a tactic media companies are already familiar with: exclusivity.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcxs0qyg000k3b6onezvo6x3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cYou look at the creation of HBO (Max), you look at the creation of Apple TV+, they grew their audiences based on exclusives, that\u2019s why you went to them,\u201d Seiden said. \u201cI think that model is very familiar to entertainment companies, and they can go to their board saying, \u2018Hey, this is how platforms grow, with exclusive content.\u2019\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcxs0qyg000l3b6oax1d7hax@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That\u2019s what makes live virtual sports an easy way to break down extended reality (XR) barriers for audiences. Paul Rapha\u00ebl, co-founder of Felix &amp; Paul, said sports can be easily adapted for immersive platforms using 180-degree cameras.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/gettyimages-2221691283.jpg\" alt=\"Audiences experience VR e-sports games at the 2025 Jingxi E-sports Festival in Beijing, China on June 28, 2025.\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1500\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcxs0qyg000m3b6otvitir0w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cYou already have quite a few events and sports being broadcast, whether it\u2019s live or asynchronous,\u201d Rapha\u00ebl said. \u201cAs the audience grows, it\u2019s a really straightforward path to create the content or to broadcast the content.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcz1708k0005356nrvtp938l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For Hollywood, the possibility of a new major distribution platform couldn\u2019t come at a better time.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcxs0qyg000n3b6orir2120h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In today\u2019s fracturing media environment \u2014 shaken by streaming, the collapse of the cable bundle, and post-Covid box office woes \u2014 a new medium could be a crucial selling point, especially for entertainment boards looking for a new revenue vein. Jack Davis, co-founder of CryptTV, said headsets might provide a much-needed pipeline for premium content.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcxs0qyg000o3b6o4d50k0rl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAs gigantic structural changes happen in TV and film, the industry is going to need to replace those things in the aggregate,\u201d Davis said. \u201cThis could be one of the only formats that premium entertainment actually seems like it makes sense (for) the user base.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>        Budgetary and content hurdles<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcxs0qyg000q3b6olf7q5lus@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Over the past decade, investment in VR has been eclipsed by more pressing innovations, including self-driving cars and AI.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcz1k3ac000o356n0h82018i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Although it\u2019s difficult to determine how that has directly impacted XR investment, funding data from Crunchbase, a predictive company intelligence solution, shows that backing for AI and self-driving has steadily increased, rising from $39.96 billion in 2019 to $105.36 billion by 2025. Meanwhile, XR funding has experienced more erratic behavior \u2014 reaching a peak of $4.087 billion in 2021 but dropping to $347.69 million by 2025.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcxs0qyg000s3b6o638mr239@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Things were much the same in the venture capital world, where the number of global VR deals has also dropped in recent years.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcz1pzth000q356np543qs45@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            PitchBook, which examines private equity and VC deals, notes that 2019 was the largest year for VC deals in VR in the last decade, recording $6.43 billion in deals worldwide. That was significantly smaller than the $57.084 billion from AI-focused venture capitalists that year. In 2025, VR VCs \ufeffhave fallen to only $3.61 billion in global deals while AI VCs have grown to $130.89 billion.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcxs0qyg000t3b6ox6fwtxn4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But Nepveu said that\u2019s changing.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcxs0qyg000u3b6odf8r1174@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cNow that AI is more understood, you know what it\u2019s good for, what it\u2019s not capable of, the budgets now are going back into XR,\u201d Nepveu claimed.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/gettyimages-1980124888.jpg\" alt=\"People stand in line to purchase the Apple Vision Pro headset at the Fifth Avenue Apple store on February 02, 2024 in New York City.\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcxs0qyg000v3b6obst288f6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Still, tech giants investing in the development of mixed reality headsets face a daunting challenge that extends beyond the entertainment available.
