{"id":592002,"date":"2026-02-15T15:33:13","date_gmt":"2026-02-15T15:33:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/592002\/"},"modified":"2026-02-15T15:33:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-15T15:33:13","slug":"dna-mutations-discovered-in-the-children-of-chernobyl-workers-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/592002\/","title":{"rendered":"DNA Mutations Discovered in The Children of Chernobyl Workers : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The DNA damage from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ionizing_radiation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ionizing radiation<\/a> (IR) erupting from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/chernobyl-\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Chernobyl nuclear disaster<\/a> of 1986 is showing up in the children of those originally exposed, researchers have found \u2013 the first time such a transgenerational link has been clearly established.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1126\/science.abg2365\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Previous studies<\/a> have been inconclusive about whether this genetic damage could be passed from parent to child, but here the researchers \u2013 led by a team from the University of Bonn in Germany \u2013 looked for something slightly different.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than picking out new DNA mutations in the next generation, they looked for what are known as <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1371\/journal.pgen.1006315\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">clustered de novo mutations<\/a> (cDNMs): two or more mutations in close proximity, found in the children but not the parents. These would be mutations resulting from breaks in the parental DNA caused by radiation exposure.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We found a significant increase in the cDNM count in offspring of irradiated parents, and a potential association between the dose estimations and the number of cDNMs in the respective offspring,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41598-025-07030-5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">write<\/a> the researchers in their published paper.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Despite uncertainty concerning the precise nature and quantity of the IR involved, the present study is the first to provide evidence for the existence of a transgenerational effect of prolonged paternal exposure to low-dose IR on the human genome.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/MutationChart.jpg\" alt=\"cDNM chjart\" width=\"642\" height=\"651\" class=\"wp-image-191657 size-full\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>cDNM counts in the control group (blue), the radar operators group (red), and the  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/chernobyl\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73035\" data-postid=\"191654\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Chernobyl<\/a> group (yellow). Rep., 2025)<\/p>\n<p>The findings are based on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Whole_genome_sequencing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">whole genome sequencing<\/a> scans of 130 offspring of Chernobyl cleanup workers, 110 offspring of German military radar operators who were likely exposed to stray radiation, and 1,275 offspring of parents unexposed to radiation, used as controls.<\/p>\n<p>On average, the researchers found 2.65 cDNMs per child in the Chernobyl group, 1.48 per child in the German radar group, and 0.88 per child in the control group. The researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41598-025-07030-5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">say<\/a> those numbers are likely to be overestimates due to noise in the data, but even after making statistical adjustments, the difference was still significant.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s more, a higher radiation dose for the parent tended to mean a higher number of clusters in the child. This fits with the idea that radiation creates molecules known as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reactive_oxygen_species\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reactive oxygen species<\/a>, which are able to break DNA strands \u2013 breaks which can leave behind the clusters described in this study, if repaired imperfectly.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/newsletter?utm_source=promo_octopus_black\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Octopus-black-final-642x272.jpg\" alt=\"Subscribe to ScienceAlert's free fact-checked newsletter\" width=\"642\" height=\"272\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-190933 size-medium\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The good news is that the risk to health should be relatively small: children of exposed parents weren&#8217;t found to have any higher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/the-leading-risk-factor-in-disease-is-something-few-of-us-have-any-control-over\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">risk of disease<\/a>. This is partly because a lot of the cDNMs likely fall in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Non-coding_DNA\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#8216;non-coding&#8217; DNA<\/a>, rather than in genes that directly encode proteins.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Given the low overall increase in cDNMs following paternal exposure to ionizing radiation and the low proportion of the genome that is protein coding, the likelihood that a disease occurring in the offspring of exposed parents is triggered by a cDNM is minimal,&#8221; the researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41598-025-07030-5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">write<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To put this in perspective, we know that older dads are more likely to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/fatherhood-at-fifty-is-a-growing-trend-with-impacts-on-child-health\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pass on more DNA mutations<\/a> to their children. The subsequent risk of disease associated with parental age at the time of conception is higher than the potential risks from radiation exposure examined here, the researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41598-025-07030-5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/worms-at-chernobyl-appear-mysteriously-unscathed-by-radiation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Worms at Chernobyl Appear Mysteriously Unscathed by Radiation<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are some limitations to note.
