For my husband Colin and I, The Republic at Alamo Heights has been just that.

Colin and I first met while living in separate apartments at a different complex, so apartment life has always played a noteworthy role in our story.

After getting married last November, we moved into a beautiful two-story, three-bedroom home. While we loved the space, we realized we wanted something different and closer to where we first met.

What we really wanted was something simpler. Something that gave us comfort, community, and convenience. That’s when we found The Republic.

Jocelyn Lopez-Woods and her husband Colin enjoy having tea time at their apartment in Alamo Heights, a practice Jocelyn carries over from her love of Pride and Prejudice. The layout is perfect for our needs, and the community offers everything we were looking for: modern amenities, thoughtful landscaping, two amazing pools, a yoga studio and a gym.

It’s such a peaceful environment that feels tucked away, even though we’re right in the heart of San Antonio, dangerously close to a Petco and Target, which means our dog is spoiled and our wallets are surviving … somehow.

One of the things we value most is the sense of safety here. Whether we’re out walking our puppy Wemby late in the evening or returning home after a long day, there’s a real sense of security.

The Woods’ dog Wemby was named Pet of the Month at their apartment complex. He was recently named Pet of the Month by The Republic, which confirmed to us that this is a community that cares about its residents (both two- and four-legged). One of my favorite parts of the day is sneaking in a mini-break at one of the two on-site dog parks. It’s the perfect way to get fresh air, let our pup burn off some energy, and reset mentally before heading back to work or errands.

Another huge perk is our location — both of our jobs are now much closer. I work with the Alamo Heights Independent School District. As an educator, one thing that I have always found to be important is to live in the community that I serve.

I’m excited to be able to do that again this year.

This place has a genuine sense of community that we didn’t even realize we were missing until we found it. From friendly faces at the mailbox to the team in the leasing office who always make us feel welcome, the atmosphere here is warm, easygoing, and positive.

Jocelyn and her husband Colin enjoy sitting on the back porch of their Alamo Heights apartment, which overlooks the pool area. Credit: Clint Datchuk for the San Antonio Report

The Republic at Alamo Heights isn’t just an apartment complex — it’s our home. We feel lucky every day to have found a place that fits our lives so well, and we’re looking forward to creating many more memories here in the years ahead.

The Where I Live series aims to showcase our diverse city and region by spotlighting its many vibrant neighborhoods.
