\t\tRobby Hoffman Clears Up Claim After She \u201cDidn\u2019t Read the Script\u201d\t<\/p>\n

\n\tRobby Hoffman\u00a0was the most frequent presenter at the\u00a02026 Independent Spirit Awards<\/a>, and in between delivering some of the most shining commentary on Sunday, she had to jokingly walk back a claim she made when introducing a grant recipient. The\u00a0Hacks\u00a0star hit the\u00a0Hollywood Palladium\u00a0stage to state the winners of the\u00a0Spirit Awards\u2018 three grants: the Someone to Watch Award, the Truer Than Fiction Award and the Producers Award. While she was introducing the first honor, Hoffman joked that \u201cyou can spend the money how you want. I mean, what the hell do I care, right?\u201d (Tatti Ribeiro, director of\u00a0Valentina, earned the Someone to Watch Award last month.) \t\tEgo Nwodim Pokes Fun at Cher\u2019s Luther Vandross Grammys Flub\t<\/p>\n

\n\tEgo Nwodim\u00a0poked fun at\u00a0Cher mistakenly naming\u00a0the late Luther Vandross<\/a> a winner at this year\u2019s Grammys during her\u00a02026 Independent Spirit Awards\u00a0monologue. The former\u00a0Saturday Night Live\u00a0hosted the Spirit\u00a0Awards, leading the show for her first time. After walking through the theater and taking the stage, Nwodim noted that \u201cthere\u2019s a lot of incredible films nominated this year.\u201d \u201cA couple of them actually take place over the course of a single day,\u201d she added, citing the Keke Palmer and SZA-starring\u00a0One of Them Days. \u201cIn\u00a0One of Them Days, Keke Palmer and SZA raced through L.A. to hunt down a mistress, apply for a loan, donate blood, get stuck on a telephone pole, get evicted, escape a fire and get a bad guy thrown in jail,\u201d Nwodim said. \u201cApparently, even in movies, Black women have to do twice as much. \t\tKumail Nanjiani Jokes He\u2019s a \u201cWhite Guy\u201d Before Presenting\t<\/p>\n

\n\tBefore Naomi Ackie won the award for supporting performance at the\u00a02026 Independent Spirit Awards,\u00a0Kumail Nanjiani\u00a0pointed out that only one white man was nominated in the category, going on to joke about the demographic\u2019s \u201ccomeback.\u201d \u201cI\u2019m here to present the award for best supporting actor performance. We have 10 nominees, and this year\u2019s nominees include only one white man,\u201d he began. \u201cHa ha, your time is over, white man.\u201d \u201cI\u2019m joking, you guys came back. \t\tNatasha Rothwell Goes Off Script, Saying \u201cFuck ICE\u201d\t<\/p>\n

\n\tThe stars at the\u00a02026 Film Independent Spirit Awards<\/a>, including Natasha Rothwell, Tessa Thompson and Kumail Nanjiani, were not afraid to make their anti-ICE\u00a0stance known. Amid a tense political era in the United States under President Donald Trump,\u00a0several celebrities have been speaking out\u00a0against his administration and his aggressive immigration policies, in particular, during the 2026\u00a0awards\u00a0season, and it was no different on Sunday. Before presenting the award for best ensemble cast in a new scripted series to the Jason Momoa-led\u00a0Chief of War,\u00a0White Lotus\u00a0alum Natasha Rothwell went off script for a moment, saying, \u201cI\u2019m gonna go to the prompter, but I just want to say, \u2018Fuck ICE.\u2019\u201d She was also wearing an \u201cICE Out\u201d pin. \t\tLurker Director Alex Russell Likens Indie Film Risk to \u2018Ratatouille\u2019 Scene\t<\/p>\n

\n\tAfter\u00a0Lurker\u00a0won the best first screenplay award at the\u00a02026 Film Independent Spirit Awards\u00a0on Sunday, writer and director Alex Russell took a moment to thank the people who take risks on indie film and likened that vulnerability to a scene in the 2007 animated film\u00a0Ratatouille. \u201cThere\u2019s this part of\u00a0Ratatouille\u00a0near the end where we go into the food critics POV, and he\u2019s talking about how most of the time he\u2019s like, hating on everything, but where he feels the most valuable is when there\u2019s a new voice and he has to take a risk,\u201d Russell said on stage. \u201cIn the case of first features, so many people had to be that food critic in\u00a0Ratatouille\u00a0and say, \u2018OK, maybe let\u2019s give this kid a chance, even if it makes us look stupid.\u2019 And that can mean anything from putting up financing to just, like, forwarding an email, but it can amaze you how much no one cares at the beginning, and then it\u2019s so much more meaningful when someone does.\u201d Read more<\/a>. \u2014 Beatrice Verhoeven<\/p>\n
