{"id":595413,"date":"2026-02-17T03:14:10","date_gmt":"2026-02-17T03:14:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/595413\/"},"modified":"2026-02-17T03:14:10","modified_gmt":"2026-02-17T03:14:10","slug":"duke-grad-is-a-candidate-to-become-nasa-astronaut-wral-com","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/595413\/","title":{"rendered":"Duke grad is a candidate to become NASA astronaut :: WRAL.com"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Duke University graduate is an astronaut candidate with<br \/>\nNASA.<\/p>\n<p>Anna Menon has previously been on a mission with Space X,<br \/>\nand now she&#8217;s in the middle of a two-year training program to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wral.com\/news\/local\/duke-alumna-anna-menon-nasa-2025-astronaut-class\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">prepare her for<br \/>\nNASA&#8217;s mission to the moon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am just thrilled to be here as a part of NASA\u2019s<br \/>\n[astronaut candidate] class,\u201d Menon said. \u201cReally, what these first couple years<br \/>\nentail is all the foundational training.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd, after that, they will start assigning us to specific missions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Menon said she is learning about space walking, how to fly<br \/>\njets and the International Space Station [ISS].<\/p>\n<p>WRAL News asked Menon how she trains to walk in space.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are a lot of great tools that NASA has developed over<br \/>\nthe years to train for \u00a0space walks,\u201d<br \/>\nMenon said. \u201cOne of them involves a giant pool here at Johnson Space Center [in<br \/>\nHouston] called the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Menon said she can practice the steps of an entire space<br \/>\nwalking operation, which can take up to six hours. She has been to outer space<br \/>\nbefore as part of SpaceX\u2019s Polaris Dawn, which was a five-day private mission<br \/>\nthat launched on Sept. 10, 2024. Menon was one of four crew members.<\/p>\n<p>WRAL News asked Menon if her children want to follow in her<br \/>\nfootsteps.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re really excited to support them and what they\u2019re<br \/>\ncurious about,\u201d Menon said. \u201cMy son currently wants to be a paleontologist and my<br \/>\ndaughter currently wants to have five different jobs at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tOther NC astronauts<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wral.com\/news\/local\/unc-alumna-zena-cardman-nasa-crew11-launch-july-2025\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Zena Cardman<\/a> is a graduate of the University of North<br \/>\nCarolina at Chapel Hill. He just got back from a mission to the ISS.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wral.com\/news\/local\/artemis-ii-astronauts-train-iceland-lunar-geology-dec-2023\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Christina Koch<\/a> is an NC State graduate who is scheduled to<br \/>\ntravel in March to the moon.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A Duke University graduate is an astronaut candidate with NASA.
