Obtained by the New York Post<\/p>\n<p>The thief was\u00a0allegedly ripping off stores where he had already been banned for theft \u2014 but was set free by judges after his arraignments on the latest offenses, court records show.<\/p>\n<p>Rampant shoplifting like White is accused of has prompted stores across the city to lock their goods behind plastic barricades. <\/p>\n<p>While the number of offenses has dipped 10% so far this year over last year, the crime has surged 89% to more than 27,705 incidents this year from 14,286 in 2020, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/office-of-the-mayor\/news\/340-23\/mayor-adams-plan-combat-retail-theft-new-york-city#\/0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">police data show<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Critics and cops complain that the petty thieves are routinely released back to the street as soon as they\u2019re arrested, stymying the NYPD\u2019s attempts to return the offense to pre-2020 levels, police sources said.<\/p>\n<p>There were 1,288 criminals responsible for 45% of all shoplifting incidents, according to NYPD data obtained by The Post.<\/p>\n<p>The top four recidivists alone have 795 arrests among them, mostly for shoplifting, police sources said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The NYPD blames the problem on a lax criminal justice system that keeps trying to get the culprits \u2014 often dogged by drug addiction \u2014 into treatment programs that don\u2019t stick, creating a cycle of criminality.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey keep getting out and going back and shoplifting again,\u201d said a cop, who has arrested some of the five-finger discount offenders. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There were 1,288 criminals who were responsible for 45% of the shoplifting incidents, according to NYPD data.  Steven Hirsch<\/p>\n<p>Laron Mack, who has 203 arrests on his record, was last arrested for stealing from an Upper West Side Duane Reade, police sources said. Steven Hirsch<\/p>\n<p>In one alleged theft on May 15, White walked into iconic 30 <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/tag\/30-rockefeller-plaza\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rockefeller Plaza<\/a> around 3 p.m., swiped two shirts from displays and shoved them under his sweatshirt, according to a criminal complaint.<\/p>\n<p>He then strolled past the registers and tried to leave the store without paying, prosecutors said. Security found the shirts on him.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He was arraigned on\u00a0petty larceny charges the next day.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors asked for $3,000 cash or $60,000 bond, but Judge <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/06\/21\/us-news\/plucky-nyc-victim-94-vows-to-stand-her-ground-after-assault\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kacie Lally set him free<\/a> on supervised release, a spokeswoman said.<\/p>\n<p>The sheer number of shoplifting incidents, more than 27,000 already this year, has forced chains to lock up their goods. AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>He struck again a little more than a week later on May 25, ripping off a Duane Reade that he had hit before at 711 Third Ave. in Midtown, according to prosecutors.<\/p>\n<p>This haul at 7:30 a.m. included body wash and assorted personal care products, police sources said.<\/p>\n<p>Four days later, White went into Walgreens at 1251 6th Ave. in Midtown on May 29 and tried to make a dash with baby wipes, authorities said. He had already been banned from the store.<\/p>\n<p>Jacob Poole, who has been arrested 103 times, stole $215 worth of chicken packs from a business in the South Street Seaport, law enforcement sources said. Obtained by the New York Post<\/p>\n<p>On May 30, prosecutors requested $20,000 cash bail or $60,000 bond, but this time <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/05\/03\/bill-de-blasio-backs-judge-who-tried-to-jail-alleged-synagogue-vandal\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Judge Loius Nock<\/a> set him free on supervised release. <\/p>\n<p>In their bail application, prosecutors pointed out that White had multiple pending felony theft cases and that he was on parole for a 2023 burglary conviction, according to a spokeswoman.\u00a0 He was released from prison in December 2024. Two months after he was sprung, he snatched 11 toothbrushes from a Walgreens in Midtown, prosecutors said.<\/p>\n<p>Customers throughout the city are forced to call for service to unlock cases and access products. This is probably a guy who should be locked up for a long time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another robbin\u2019 hood is Davaghn Gethers, who has been arrested a whopping 235 times, mostly for shoplifting, police sources said.<\/p>\n<p>His most recent arrest was on May 27 for thieving in Midtown. He was released the same day without bail.<\/p>\n<p>Devon Gethers, who has 254 arrests to his name, tells cops that he doesn\u2019t mind being arrested because he knows he\u2019ll be released, according to a police source.
