{"id":597055,"date":"2026-02-17T20:02:13","date_gmt":"2026-02-17T20:02:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/597055\/"},"modified":"2026-02-17T20:02:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-17T20:02:13","slug":"gisele-pelicots-memoir-released-in-22-languages-shares-survival-story","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/597055\/","title":{"rendered":"Gis\u00e8le Pelicot&#8217;s memoir released in 22 languages shares survival story"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PARIS (AP) \u2014 Gis\u00e8le Pelicot\u2019s memoir was released on Tuesday in 22 languages worldwide, sharing <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/gisele-pelicot-france-dominique-pelicot-rape-police-dfd810cffa485983ad667586976fef72\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">details of the horror<\/a> she went through and sending a powerful message of hope and support to victims of sexual abuse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted my story to help others,\u201d Pelicot told French national channel France 5 last week ahead of the release of her book, \u201cA Hymn to Life, Shame has to Change Sides.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Pelicot recounted <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/video\/sexual-assault-crime-46c07b7f27314f7aa8f9acbd5c78eb85\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">her story of survival<\/a> in the book and in her first series of interviews since the landmark 2024 trial that turned her into a global <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/france-gisele-pelicot-rape-sexual-violence-4da8a8c5ca1b8fba85759ce4e9c0b77a\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">icon against sexual violence<\/a> and imprisoned her husband, who <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/france-rape-trial-drugged-pelicot-943400b83a8b111bcd42a0fb23a1cfda\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">drugged her<\/a> so other men could assault her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday I\u2019m doing better, and this book allowed me to engage in self-reflection, to take stock of my life,\u201d she said. \u201cI had to try to rebuild myself on this field of ruins. (AP Photo\/Abbie Parr, File)\"  width=\"599\" height=\"399\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/1771358533_499_.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Gymnastic superstar and Olympic gold medalist <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/simone-biles\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Simone Biles<\/a>, herself a <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/simone-biles-gymnastics-sexual-abuse-larry-nassar-cb63ffbfd09d9d4ffe21561aa63d3ca5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">survivor of sexual abuse<\/a>, paid tribute to Pelicot in a message broadcast by the BBC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGis\u00e8le has demonstrated to the world that it\u2019s not for victims of sexual abuse to feel shame \u2014 it\u2019s the perpetrators,\u201d Biles said. \u201cBy waiving her anonymity and refusing to feel shame, Gis\u00e8le paves the way for other victims to come forward.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>At the \u201cDes Femmes\u201d (\u201cWomen\u2019s\u201d) bookstore in Paris, several readers were eager to buy Pelicot\u2019s book on the day of its release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to read it,\u201d said C\u00e9cile Megueulle, who admires Pelicot. \u201cBut I tell myself that reading it will be \u2026 actually a little scary. The fact of not being in her shoes but being able to see the other side of the mirror, how she experienced it and how she managed \u2014 I don\u2019t know if we can say that \u2014 to get through it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Selma Memic, a lawyer from Geneva, Switzerland, said: \u201cThe case was known as the \u2018Pelicot case\u2019 \u2026 and now we\u2019re going to hear about \u2018Gis\u00e8le\u2019. So, that\u2019s maybe what I\u2019m looking for. Who is Gis\u00e8le? What are her feelings? How does she look back at it (the trial)?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In December 2024, Pelicot\u2019s ex-husband, Dominique Pelicot, and 50 other men were <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/france-rape-trial-drugged-pelicot-943400b83a8b111bcd42a0fb23a1cfda\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">convicted of sexually assaulting<\/a> her between 2011 and 2020 while she was under chemical submission. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison, while the other defendants received sentences ranging from three to 15 years. <\/p>\n<p>An appeals court <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/gisele-pelicot-rape-trial-france-sentence-dogan-44fa4957af5b1ba1248fea9e95aa1238\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">later increased<\/a> the sentence handed to Husamettin Dogan, a construction worker who was the only defendant who challenged his conviction.<\/p>\n<p>Dominique Pelicot, whom Gis\u00e8le Pelicot had been married to for nearly 50 years, acknowledged that for years he mixed sedatives into her food and drink so he could rape her and invite other men to do the same.<\/p>\n<p>The unprecedented <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trial-rape-drug-france-husband-wife-5ad00446b8a76f0c8d14f349df9147e3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">trial exposed<\/a> how online pornography, chat rooms and distorted notions of consent can fuel sexual violence. <\/p>\n<p>France <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/france-consent-rape-law-gisele-pelicot-senate-b208f67c13a27898d7d8ca26472ab61a\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">passed a law<\/a> last October that defines rape and other sexual assault as any non-consensual sexual act in the wake of the Pelicot case, joining many other European nations that have similar consent-based laws, including neighboring Germany, Belgium and Spain.
