\n\tNetflix<\/a> threatened ByteDance<\/a> with \u201cimmediate litigation\u201d on Tuesday, joining three other studios that have condemned the company for enabling copyright infringement via its Seedance<\/a> 2.0 AI service.<\/p>\n

\n\tNetflix sent a cease-and-desist letter demanding that the Chinese company remove its intellectual property from training datasets and establish guardrails to prevent further infringement.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cSeedance acts as a high-speed piracy engine, generating mass quantities of unauthorized derivative works utilizing Netflix\u2019s iconic characters, worlds, and scripted narratives,\u201d wrote Mindy LeMoine, director of litigation. \u201cNetflix will not stand by and watch ByteDance treat our valued IP as free, public domain clip art.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tByteDance was given three days to respond. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe move followed similar steps by Disney, Paramount and Warner Bros., each of which accused the company of stealing its most valuable IP. Netflix accused ByteDance of enabling infringement of \u201cStranger Things<\/a>,\u201d \u201cKPop Demon Hunters,\u201d \u201cSquid Game\u201d and \u201cBridgerton.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn the case of \u201cBridgerton,\u201d the letter alleges that videos are circulating that show unauthorized depictions of costumes from Season 4 in a masquerade ball setting.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThese outputs mirror specific, narratively important costumes like Sophie Baek\u2019s \u2018Lady in Silver\u2019 gown,\u201d LeMoine wrote. \u201cByteDance has even promoted this content using #Bridgerton tags via its own official social media channels, such as @BytePlusGlobal.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tNetflix also cited videos that are circulating of the \u201cStranger Things\u201d series finale, \u201cwhich feature detailed
reproductions of the iconic cast as well as the monsters from the series, including Demogorgons and the Mindflayer.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tUsers have also created \u201cunauthorized crossovers, such as inserting real-world figures like Elon Musk into the Squid Game environment,\u201d the letter states. It also alleges that users have made video clips reproducing the visual style and character design of \u201cKPop Demon Hunters,\u201d including the lead character, Rumi.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn response to the furor, ByteDance said on Monday that it would impose additional guardrails to prevent unauthorized uses of copyrights and actors\u2019 likenesses by Seedance users. Those assurances have not been enough for Warner Bros. or Netflix, both of which sent letters on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Netflix letter was the first to explicitly threaten litigation. The letter also sought to preempt a \u201cfair use\u201d defense, arguing that \u201cuse of copyrighted works to create a competing commercial product, especially one that regurgitates the original, is not protected by fair use.\u201d<\/p>\n
