The researchers compared reports by geography \u2014 city versus suburban schools \u2014 and by school socioeconomic status. Yet few studies track how often sports-related concussions occur among children in Texas and nationally, and how those rates vary by demographic factors, the authors of the study wrote. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">In the D-FW area, the study found districts in lower-income parts of Dallas and Tarrant counties \u2014 including Dallas ISD, Duncanville ISD, DeSoto ISD and Fort Worth ISD \u2014 showed lower reported concussion rates. The researchers noted that the pattern echoes past findings in which lower-income communities report fewer concussions, suggesting that some injuries are being missed. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cWhile the differences were small between high socioeconomic and low socioeconomic districts in popular sports such as football, they were far more pronounced in smaller sports with fewer participants, such as wrestling, cross-country, and swimming and diving, as well as activities such as drill team and band,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.utsouthwestern.edu\/departments\/neurology\/education\/residency\/residents.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Joshua Beitchman<\/a>, the study\u2019s co-author and a pediatric neurology resident at UTSW, said in the news release. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cThis points to awareness and resource allocation as an issue, as lower-resourced districts may struggle to provide awareness training and on-site medical coverage for smaller sports.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"aspect-ratio:5460 \/ 3640\"   class=\"dmnc_images-modern-image-module__QFaG- max-w-full h-auto text-white dmnc_images-modern-image-module__9Zlll bg-gray-light object-contain\" width=\"5460\" height=\"3640\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/WO5CXU23QVHVZLGGJB2G25GUSI.JPG\" alt=\"C. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/articles\/2019\/cte-football\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2019 study<\/a> found the risk of developing CTE doubles for every 2.6 years of playing football.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The prevalence of CTE in the general population is unknown. But a <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamaneurology\/fullarticle\/2808952?guestAccessKey=a1d4b21c-b751-494f-a738-615e39b1bc25&amp;utm_source=For_The_Media&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=ftm_links&amp;utm_content=tfl&amp;utm_term=082823\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2023 study<\/a> of about 150 athletes who played contact sports such as football, hockey and rugby and died before age 30 found more than 40% had early-stage CTE. The medical condition has been reported in people <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2023\/11\/16\/us\/cte-youth-football.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">as young as 17<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Other studies have found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/2024\/08\/30\/natural-grass-or-artificial-turf-study-sheds-light-on-concussions-and-football-fields\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the kind of turf<\/a>, whether natural grass or synthetic, can impact concussion risk in young athletes. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cOne of the best ways we can improve safety for young athletes is by providing equitable access to concussion awareness and medical resources, regardless of where or what they play,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/utswmed.org\/doctors\/c-munro-cullum\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">C. Cullum is one of the study\u2019s co-authors. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cUnrecognized or unreported concussions can delay treatment and increase the risk of prolonged symptoms, academic difficulties and repeat injury.
