{"id":59990,"date":"2025-07-12T16:22:13","date_gmt":"2025-07-12T16:22:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/59990\/"},"modified":"2025-07-12T16:22:13","modified_gmt":"2025-07-12T16:22:13","slug":"david-duchovny-remembers-calling-out-character-inconsistencies-on-x-files","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/59990\/","title":{"rendered":"David Duchovny remembers calling out character inconsistencies on &#8216;X-Files&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_1-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> It&#8217;s been seven years since <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/person\/david-duchovny\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">David Duchovny<\/a> donned a suit for his iconic role as FBI special agent Fox Mulder, but he hasn&#8217;t forgotten his biggest pet peeves during his time on the beloved Fox series.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_3-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> During a recent episode of Duchovny&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/lemonadamedia.com\/show\/fail-better-with-david-duchovny\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"externalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fail Better<\/a> podcast, a series that spotlights how failures shape a person&#8217;s personal and professional trajectory, the host recalled to guest Emily Deschanel how he sometimes had to correct episodic directors on character inconsistencies.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_5-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> &#8220;It was a bit of a pet peeve of mine when I was doing X-Files \u2014 not so much the other shows that I&#8217;ve done \u2014\u00a0but, as with Bones, it&#8217;s episodic, but every episode is pretty high drama. It can be life and death,&#8221; Duchovny explained.\n<\/p>\n<p> David Duchovny behind the scenes on &#8216;X-Files&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>FOX<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_8-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> &#8220;Sometimes the directors would come on and they&#8217;d know they had a great script and [since] this was on the X-Files, this could happen, you know? Like, &#8216;Holy s***, this is a great script,&#8217; and they really wanted to kill it. Those guys were dangerous,&#8221; the actor quipped. &#8220;So often they would say, &#8216;We&#8217;ve never seen Mulder like this before,&#8217; and I&#8217;d say, &#8216;Yeah, like 10 other times we&#8217;ve seen Mulder like this before.'&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_10-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Duchovny recalled a particular instance while shooting the season one episode &#8220;Fire,&#8221; in which Mulder reveals a deep-seated fear of fire stemming from a childhood trauma.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_14-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> &#8220;I remember like in the middle of the episode, I had this thought. I I think I went up to [director] Chris Carter \u2014\u00a0who wrote that episode I believe \u2014\u00a0and I said, &#8216;Didn&#8217;t Mulder and Scully watch a building burn down in the pilot? I think Moulder was fairly cool with it, you know, it didn&#8217;t bother him,'&#8221; Duchovny told a laughing Deschanel.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_16-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> &#8220;It&#8217;s like this kind of stuff, you know where you&#8217;re going, you&#8217;re kind of the curator of the character and sometimes you have to go, &#8216;I can&#8217;t actually do that,'&#8221; the <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/article\/1999\/06\/07\/californication\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Californication<\/a> star mused.\n<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_20-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Being a stickler for consistency obviously worked out in the end; over the 11-season run of the sci-fi drama, both cast and crew picked up accolades, including Duchovny and costar <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/person\/gillian-anderson\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gillian Anderson<\/a> at the SAG Awards, where Anderson took home two of those\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/sag-awards-statuette-weight-the-actor-11684909\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">heavy trophies<\/a>\u00a0and both raked in several nominations. She was up for the award five more times, while Duchovny was nominated a total of five times. As a cast \u2014 with William B. Davis, Chris Owens, James Pickens Jr., Mitch Pileggi, and Steven Williams \u2014 they were nominated three times for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_22-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> Duchovny and Anderson starred in the Fox series from 1993 to 2002, as well as in two films. The two reprised their roles as Agents Mulder and Dana Scully in revivals of the series years later, including a tenth season in 2016 and an 11th in 2018.<\/p>\n<p> David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson at the 31st Screen Actors Guild Awards on Feb. 23, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Robert Gauthier\/Los Angeles Times via Getty<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_25-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> A treasured classic, the series has made recent headlines thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/person\/ryan-coogler\/\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ryan Coogler<\/a>&#8216;s upcoming reboot.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_27-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> The <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/sinners-scene-breakdown-juke-joint-ancestors-performance-11718104\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sinners<\/a> director was reported to be developing an\u00a0X-Files\u00a0series back in 2023, when original creator Chris Carter revealed that a reboot from the filmmaker was in its early stages. In the wake of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ew.com\/sinners-second-weekend-at-box-office-top-11722973\" data-component=\"link\" data-source=\"inlineLink\" data-type=\"internalLink\" data-ordinal=\"2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">success of his Michael B. Jordan-led vampire thriller<\/a>, Coogler has opened up about his plans for the\u00a0X-Files\u00a0reboot now that he can focus on a new project.\n<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_29-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\"> &#8220;I&#8217;ve been excited about that for a long time, and I\u2019m fired up to get back to it.
