Neighbors and friends <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/02\/17\/rev-jesse-jackson-remembered\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">remembered him<\/a> for his \u201cgenerous\u201d personality, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/02\/17\/illinois-chicago-flags-half-staff-rev-jesse-jackson-death\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">local politicians said he was an inspiration<\/a>. Gov. JB Pritzker and Mayor Brandon Johnson ordered public buildings across the city and state to fly flags at half-staff.<\/p>\n<p>Yusef Jackson called his father Wednesday a \u201clion among lions\u201d who dedicated his life to public service to make the nation better, the world more just and people better neighbors.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"aza1E0Gm1f\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2026\/02\/18\/rev-jesse-jackson-what-to-know\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">A titan of civil rights: Remembering Rev. Jesse L. Jackson<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cRev. Jackson would say \u2018it is my religion that makes me political, not my politics that makes me religious,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cWe, his family, and the many others touched by him, inspired by him, are left obligated to continue his work to make our nation a better place for all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A Baptist minister born in South Carolina, Jackson was a prot\u00e9g\u00e9 of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., who participated in the Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, marches. He continued the fight for social justice and civil rights through the coalition and campaigned twice unsuccessfully for president. He stepped down as the president of Rainbow\/PUSH in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Tribune columnist Steve Daley called him in 1990 a \u201cpolitical force of nature\u201d who is both an \u201celoquent voice for the dispossessed and a relentless manipulator of events and issues, hopscotching from coal strike to South Africa to statehood for the District of Columbia.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A day after the Rev.
