\n\tIn a sprawling interview with The Times U.K.<\/a>, Johnny Depp<\/a> claimed he was a \u201ccrash test dummy for #MeToo<\/a>,\u201d reflecting on his protracted legal battle with actress and ex-wife Amber Heard<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cMy comeback? Honestly? I didn\u2019t go anywhere,\u201d he said. \u201cIf I had the chance to split I would never come back.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Pirates of the Caribbean star, who classified his ousting from Hollywood as a \u201cboycott,\u201d praised the San Sebasti\u00e1n International Film Festival for sticking with him through \u201call the hit pieces, the bullsh\u2013.\u201d In 2021, the fest awarded him the prestigious Donostia<\/a>, its highest accolade, and last year, his second directorial effort, Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness, garnered a long-standing ovation<\/a> by the crowd.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cNo, I have no regrets about anything \u2014 because, truly, what can we do about last week\u2019s dinner? Not a f\u2014ing thing,\u201d he said of the much-publicized court trial with Heard.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn 2022, Depp and Heard engaged in a contentious court battle during which a jury unanimously found he was defamed<\/a>. After Heard filed an appeal of the verdict, the two announced separately that the case\u00a0had been settled<\/a>\u00a0with the money paid by Heard going to charity. The case stemmed from a 2018\u00a0Washington Post\u00a0op-ed<\/a> in which Heard said she was a survivor of domestic violence without mentioning Depp\u2019s name. Throughout the media circus that ensued during the live-streamed trial, Heard \u2014 who wields considerably less power as a woman who is not as well-known nor cherished as veteran Depp \u2014 was largely raked over the coals both online and by Depp\u2019s fans who lined the doors outside the courtroom, receiving death threats. Studies conducted by a research firm also indicated the overwhelming hatred she experienced on social media was not entirely human-generated<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\n\tThe Virginia battle also followed a separate libel case in the U.K. over\u00a0The Sun\u2018s calling Depp a \u201cwife beater.\u201d The judge sided with the publication<\/a> in 2020, after which Depp was asked to resign<\/a> from Warner Bros.\u2019\u00a0Fantastic Beasts\u00a0franchise, with the judge finding that the \u201cgreat majority of alleged assaults of Ms. Heard by Mr. Depp have been proved.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tWhen asked why he pursued the public trial in the U.S., Depp answered: \u201cLook, it had gone far enough. I knew I\u2019d have to semi-eviscerate myself. Everyone was saying, \u2018It\u2019ll go away!\u2019 But I can\u2019t trust that. What will go away? The fiction pawned around the f\u2014ing globe? No it won\u2019t. If I don\u2019t try to represent the truth it will be like I\u2019ve actually committed the acts I am accused of. And my kids will have to live with it. Their kids. Kids that I\u2019ve met in hospitals. So the night before the trial in Virginia I didn\u2019t feel nervous. If I don\u2019t have to memorize lines, if you\u2019re just speaking the truth? Roll the dice.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe continued, \u201cLook, none of this was going to be easy, but I didn\u2019t care. I thought, \u2018I\u2019ll fight until the bitter f\u2014ing end.\u2019 And if I end up pumping gas? That\u2019s all right. I\u2019ve done that before.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDepp also claimed his experience predated #MeToo, and that\u2019s why people failed to support him. However, activist Tarana Burke\u2019s hashtag and movement were founded in 2006, later moving to the entertainment industry space circa 2017, the same year the New York Times and The New Yorker published expos\u00e9s on now-disgraced mogul Harvey Weinstein<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019ll tell you what hurts. There are people, and I\u2019m thinking of three, who did me dirty. Those people were at my kids\u2019 parties. Throwing them in the air. And, look, I understand people who could not stand up [for me] because the most frightening thing to them was making the right choice,\u201d he said. \u201cI was pre-#MeToo. I was like a crash test dummy for #MeToo. It was before Harvey Weinstein. And I sponged it, took it all in. And so I wanted from the hundreds of people I\u2019ve met in that industry to see who was playing it safe. Better go woke!\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSince 2022, the actor hasn\u2019t really gone gently into that good night \u2014 hence the disagreement with the term \u201ccomeback.\u201d That year, he made a surprise appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards; later on, he embarked on a 2023 European tour with band Hollywood Vampires and was seen in Savage X Fenty\u2019s fashion show. More recently, he is set to reunite with\u00a0Pirates of the Caribbean\u00a0co-star Penelope Cruz in\u00a0Lionsgate\u2019s upcoming\u00a0Day Drinker<\/a>, also featuring Madelyn Cline<\/a>.
