Mango<\/p>\n<p>The Harlem pol <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/06\/29\/yusef-salaam-nyc-council-primary-winner-and-central-park-five-member-ready-to-work-with-nypd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">won his seat in 2023<\/a>, then took office at the start of 2024 \u2014 so it\u2019s not clear when the taxes owed date back to.<\/p>\n<p>His office declined to comment, and the IRS is\u00a0barred from disclosing tax return information.<\/p>\n<p>Salaam maintains his mountain of debt despite making a killing in speaking fees since <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/06\/29\/yusef-salaam-nyc-council-primary-winner-and-central-park-five-member-ready-to-work-with-nypd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">his surprise victory<\/a> in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>He charges <a href=\"https:\/\/keyspeakers.com\/bio.php?4395-yusef-salaam\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">around $31,000 a pop for a virtual event<\/a> \u2014 and closer to $40,000 to come talk about criminal justice in person.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s had at least 36 speaking engagements since announcing his run in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Salaam was 16 when the court proceedings took place in 1990. ASSOCIATED PRESS<\/p>\n<p>Since taking office last year, he raked in up to $250,000 in fees alone, records show \u2014 on top of the $148,500 salary <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/01\/29\/metro\/nyc-councilman-yusef-salaam-facing-calls-to-resign-safety-committee-chairmanship-after-he-lied-about-nypd-traffic-stop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he gets for his Council gig.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The father of 10 also declared getting \u201c$500,000 or more\u201d annually from a trust, estate or other beneficial interest, likely the terms of his 2014 settlement with the city.<\/p>\n<p>NYC ended up paying $40.75 million to the members of the Central Park Five to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2014\/09\/05\/judge-signs-off-on-41m-central-park-five-settlement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">settle a civil rights suit<\/a>. Salaam\u2019s share was $7.125 million. <\/p>\n<p>Salaam was arrested along with four other Black and Latino teenagers in the Central Park case in 1989. NY Post File Photo<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t the first controversy for the councilman, who\u2019s also chairman of the Public Safety Committee overseeing the NYPD.<\/p>\n<p>Last year he was caught <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/02\/04\/metro\/yusef-salaam-controversial-traffic-stop-highlights-ny-issue-of-19k-misrepresented-license-plates-insurance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">motoring around the Big Apple with out-of-state license plates<\/a> and alleged illegally tinted windows. He was living in Georgia for six years before running for office in the Big Apple and still had his Peach State plates.<\/p>\n<p>Salaam says he\u2019s been in the process of repaying all taxes for the past two years.
