{"id":60136,"date":"2025-07-12T17:41:09","date_gmt":"2025-07-12T17:41:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/60136\/"},"modified":"2025-07-12T17:41:09","modified_gmt":"2025-07-12T17:41:09","slug":"ed-helms-did-hangover-despite-socially-conservative-parents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/60136\/","title":{"rendered":"Ed Helms Did &#8216;Hangover&#8217; Despite &#8216;Socially Conservative&#8217; Parents"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/t\/ed-helms\/\" id=\"auto-tag_ed-helms\" data-tag=\"ed-helms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ed Helms<\/a> certainly did not end up having the career that his parents envisioned for him. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/t\/the-hangover\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-hangover\" data-tag=\"the-hangover\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Hangover<\/a>\u201d \u2014\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/news\/general-news\/todd-phillips-responds-to-hangover-critics-127887\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/news\/general-news\/todd-phillips-responds-to-hangover-critics-127887\/\">and its two sequels<\/a> \u2014\u00a0are about as far from traditional, buttoned-up, family-friendly comedy as a movie can get, and this ran precisely counter to Helms\u2019 upbringing, as he shared with host Ted Danson <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-id=\"https:\/\/teamcoco.com\/podcasts\/where-everybody-knows-your-name\/episodes\/ed-helms\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/teamcoco.com\/podcasts\/where-everybody-knows-your-name\/episodes\/ed-helms\">on the SiriusXM podcast \u201cWhere Everybody Knows Your Name.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI grew up in a kind of a repressed Southern home. Politically, very progressive, but still a very socially conservative kind of environment,\u201d Helms said (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-id=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/film\/news\/ed-helms-conservative-parents-the-hangover-1236451895\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/film\/news\/ed-helms-conservative-parents-the-hangover-1236451895\/\">via Variety<\/a>). \u201cAnd so \u2018The Hangover\u2019 is nuts. That\u2019s not what they raised me to do, to be in a movie like \u2018The Hangover.\u2019 So my parents \u2014 at that point they\u2019d seen me do crazy stuff on \u2018The Daily Show\u2019 and \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/t\/the-office\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-office\" data-tag=\"the-office\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Office<\/a>\u2018 \u2014 and so there was some sort of acceptance already, but, still, I was nervous for my parents to see \u2018The Hangover.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/features\/best-of\/a-boy-and-his-dog-50-years-midnight-movie-1235138160\/\" title=\"\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" data-card-index=\"0\" data-post-id=\"1235138160\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/MCDBOAN_EC040.jpg\" alt=\"The U.S. poster for 'A Boy and His Dog' (1975)\" height=\"168\" width=\"300\"   loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" data-attachment-id=\"1235138161\" data-wp-size=\"nova_size__sixteenbynine_small_cropped\"\/><\/a>  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/news\/general-news\/tom-holland-christopher-nolan-odyssey-job-of-a-lifetime-1235138069\/\" title=\"\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" data-card-index=\"1\" data-post-id=\"1235138069\"><img src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/P115V85B.jpg\" alt=\"Tom Holland at The 29th Critics' Choice Awards in 2024\" height=\"168\" width=\"300\"   loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" data-attachment-id=\"1235138086\" data-wp-size=\"nova_size__sixteenbynine_small_cropped\"\/><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>Helms, 35 years old by the time the first \u201cHangover\u201d movie was released in 2009 (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/title\/tt1119646\/?ref_=bo_se_r_1\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/title\/tt1119646\/?ref_=bo_se_r_1\">and made over $469 million<\/a>), ended up putting aside his nerves and taking his parents to the premiere.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m looking at my mom, the lights come up, and she\u2019s crying. Tears streaming down her face, and, for a second, I\u2019m like, \u2018Did I just break my poor mom\u2019s heart?&#8217;\u201d Far from breaking her heart, Helms\u2019 mother was impressed, telling her movie star son, \u201cThat was so funny\u201d and giving him a big hug. \u201cI\u2019ll just never forget that was such a special moment,\u201d he recalled.<\/p>\n<p>Helms <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/features\/general\/ed-helms-the-hangover-fame-created-anxiety-1234795079\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/features\/general\/ed-helms-the-hangover-fame-created-anxiety-1234795079\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has previously spoken of<\/a> the difficulty he had dealing with the sudden fame that came with the immediate success of \u201cThe Hangover,\u201d which catapulted him from television favorite to major motion picture player.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a tornado of fame and a lot of buffeting. It was very overwhelming,\u201d Helms told Conan O\u2019Brien <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" data-id=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/ed-helms\/id1438054347?i=1000591281217\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/ed-helms\/id1438054347?i=1000591281217\">on his podcast<\/a> in 2022. \u201cI really was reeling a lot of the time, like in the aftermath of \u2018The Hangover,\u2019 I was getting scripts for all these different kinds of projects. \u2018Like what do I do? I dunno.\u2019 I was kind of spinning out and panicking about different things. Like, \u2018Well, what kind of a career do you want?&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Helms credited his co-stars Zach Galifianakis and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/news\/general-news\/bradley-cooper-would-make-the-hangover-4-in-an-instant-1234929405\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/news\/general-news\/bradley-cooper-would-make-the-hangover-4-in-an-instant-1234929405\/\">Bradley Cooper <\/a>for keeping his feet on the ground.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf it wasn\u2019t for those guys, I don\u2019t think I would\u2019ve stayed sane. But we all had each other to kind of be like, you know, I don\u2019t know, just to commiserate and measure ourselves,\u201d Helms said. \u201cAnd I think we kept each other from drifting too far.
