{"id":601869,"date":"2026-02-19T21:08:12","date_gmt":"2026-02-19T21:08:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/601869\/"},"modified":"2026-02-19T21:08:12","modified_gmt":"2026-02-19T21:08:12","slug":"new-jacksonville-magazine-honors-black-legacy-media","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/601869\/","title":{"rendered":"New Jacksonville magazine honors Black legacy media"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><strong>JACKSONVILLE, FL<\/strong> \u2013 A new independent publication is quickly making its presence known in the Bold City.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.boldmagjax.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.boldmagjax.com\/\">Bold Magazine<\/a>, launched in November by Jacksonville natives Maurice Henderson and Troy McNair Sr., is dedicated to highlighting young Black entrepreneurs, businesses, and artists, while paying homage to the Black magazines many grew up seeing on their parents\u2019 coffee tables, like JET, Ebony, and Vibe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Henderson and McNair are also the founders of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news4jax.com\/video\/news\/morning-show\/2025\/04\/01\/think-bold-festival-and-conference-coming-to-jacksonville\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.news4jax.com\/video\/news\/morning-show\/2025\/04\/01\/think-bold-festival-and-conference-coming-to-jacksonville\/\">Think Bold Festival<\/a>, and say the print publication is a natural extension of their mission to connect culture and commerce in Jacksonville.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWhat we started paying attention to was that there are some bold-preneurs out there,\u201d McNair, co-founder of Bold Magazine, said. \u201cWe felt they need to be amplified because they\u2019re doing great work, but you don\u2019t hear about them in publications.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Each issue of Bold Magazine focuses on Black-owned businesses, creatives and community leaders whose stories might otherwise go untold. The founders say documenting those stories now is as much about the future as it is about the present.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWe\u2019re definitely honoring bold-preneurs that are Black Americans, and we\u2019re sharing their story,\u201d they said. \u201cBecause 50 years from now, 100 years from now, they will be a part of a story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">For Henderson, the work is also deeply personal. As he traced his own family history, he learned that his great-great-great-grandfather, Gustavus Henderson, started what he says was the first Black-owned magazine in Winter Park.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cFor me, it\u2019s a little bit more personal,\u201d Henderson said. \u201cJust throughout learning my family\u2019s lineage\u2026 So for me, it\u2019s almost like a legacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">From layout to photography, Bold\u2019s design intentionally echoes the look and feel of legacy Black publications.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cEbony Magazine, JET Magazine, Essence Magazine,\u201d McNair said. \u201cSo I think Bold is actually well on their shoulders of giving new stories, whether it\u2019s culture or whether it\u2019s commerce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">They say every story is meant to leave readers feeling seen and motivated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThe overall arching theme, I think, is for the reader to be able to identify with somebody that they can relate to,\u201d they said<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Already, the magazine is sparking conversation and driving customers to the businesses it features.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWhat they will do is post on social media with the magazine and talk about how folks are coming to their businesses,\u201d the founders said. \u201cAs a matter of fact, we have other businesses calling us: \u2018When you guys gonna do a story about us?\u2019 A lot of times, they can email us. If we think the story is great\u2026 then we\u2019ll amplify it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Bold Magazine can already be found in local shops and businesses across Jacksonville, and the co-founders say they plan to continue expanding their reach and the range of stories they tell, keeping Black entrepreneurs, creators and community voices at the center.<\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 by WJXT News4JAX &#8211; All rights reserved.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"JACKSONVILLE, FL \u2013 A new independent publication is quickly making its presence known in the Bold City.
