The New York Yankees<\/a> and Jazz Chisholm Jr. may come to an impasse sooner rather than later.<\/p>\n

The problem: His contract.<\/p>\n

Chisholm is entering the last year of his current deal. If nothing happens, he’ll be a free agent after the season.<\/p>\n

On the surface, it seems like the Yankees would want to re-sign him. But so far, no movement.<\/p>\n

Chisholm told The Athletic’s Chris Kirschner<\/a> that he’s open to a new deal but that the Yankees haven’t approached him about anything yet.<\/p>\n

Spring Training is a time such a contract would often be negotiated and potentially completed. The longer it goes with no such talks, the tougher it’ll be for Chisholm to land a deal to stay in place.<\/p>\n

There were actually rumors in the offseason that Chisholm could end up as a trade candidate. As a guy entering the final year of his deal, it’s something that at least has to be viewed as possible.<\/p>\n

Chisholm is a potent player with a lot of power and speed, but his game does lend itself to some inconsistency.<\/p>\n

The toughest part is always value on one side versus the other.<\/p>\n

Chisholm can likely pitch himself as a 30-30 threat and believe he warrants a huge deal.<\/p>\n

The Yankees can point to risks in his player profile and not want to go as big.<\/p>\n

And if they can’t agree, then Chisholm may end up in something other than pinstripes next season.<\/p>\n
