An Arlington man who has been in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement\u00a0custody since last fall<\/a>\u00a0is accepting removal to his home country of Jordan.<\/p>\n

The family of Maher Tarabishi announced Thursday he will voluntarily leave the U.S. \u201cin order to secure his freedom\u201d following the death of his 30-year-old son, Wael Tarabishi, who died last month in the ICU at the Mansfield Medical Center while his father was detained at the Bluebonnet Detention Facility in Anson, 200 miles west of Dallas.<\/p>\n

\u201cWael was Maher\u2019s reason to keep fighting,\u201d the family said in a statement posted to Instagram, \u201cto comply with every requirement of his immigration case and to endure inhumane cruel detention conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Maher Tarabishi was detained in late October after his annual check-in at the Dallas ICE Field office. He came to the U.S. from Jordan in 1994. ICE alleged he was a \u201cself-admitted member of the Palestine Liberation Organization,\u201d something his family denies.<\/p>\n

For months, the family and advocates\u00a0asked for his humanitarian release<\/a>\u00a0so he could care for his son, who had Pompe Disease, a rare genetic condition. They also asked for his release to attend his son\u2019s funeral, which was denied.<\/p>\n

\u201cICE is responsible for every single thing that’s happening to my family right now,” Tarabishi\u2019s daughter-in-law Shahd Arnaout told KERA last month.<\/p>\n

The family said in the statement ICE\u2019s detention of Maher \u201cstripped Wael of his primary caretaker and ultimately led to his death.\u201d<\/p>\n

They have started fundraising efforts for Tarabishi\u2019s return to Jordan to secure housing and pay for basic needs.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s unclear if Tarabishi\u2019s family will return with him.<\/p>\n
