{"id":60378,"date":"2025-07-12T19:51:13","date_gmt":"2025-07-12T19:51:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/60378\/"},"modified":"2025-07-12T19:51:13","modified_gmt":"2025-07-12T19:51:13","slug":"mountain-lion-possibly-sighted-in-rochester-has-residents-panicking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/60378\/","title":{"rendered":"Mountain lion possibly sighted in Rochester has residents panicking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A big roar rattled residents in Rochester and hit a bit too close to home.<\/p>\n<p>A possible mountain lion sighting in the upstate New York city, prompted a shelter-in-place order this week, alarming local officials and sending worried residents into a panic.<\/p>\n<p>Curtis Jones came face-to-face with the fearsome feline \u2014 which was last documented in New York state in 2011 \u2014 while walking down the street on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd it said \u2018rawr,\u2019 and I just kept walking,\u201d he told\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/13wham.com\/news\/local\/man-describes-face-to-face-encounter-with-mysterious-large-cat-in-rochester-mountain-lion-rauber-street-north-clinton-avenue#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ABC affiliate in Rochester<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI seen it, seeing me, see it, so in my head I\u2019m like, \u2018Nah, I got to go man, I\u2019m out\u2019. \u2026 I\u2019ve never seen nothing like that \u2026 only on movies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.50146628;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"36518408\" width=\"886\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/108050869.jpg\" alt=\"Security camera footage of a possible mountain lion in Rochester NY \" class=\"wp-image-36518408\"  \/>The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation said based on doorbell video and the measurements taken at the site, the animal does appear to possibly be a mountain lion. <\/p>\n<p>Rochester police got wind of a social media video that seems to show the great big cat. Cops also got a flurry of calls from concerned residents who feared they too had spotted it.<\/p>\n<p>A shelter-in-place order was promptly issued \u2014 but later lifted since police couldn\u2019t verify the large lion.<\/p>\n<p>The Monroe County Sheriff\u2019s Office helped the investigation by flying an aerial drone around the area, but to no avail.<\/p>\n<p>The Seneca Park Zoo, which is located in Rochester, said none of its animals had escaped.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.33333333;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"36518416\" width=\"787\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/rochester-new-york-usa-downtown-104468359.jpg\" alt=\"Aerial view of Rochester, New York at dusk, showing the city skyline and High Falls.\" class=\"wp-image-36518416\"  \/>The last time a mountain lion was last spotted in New York was 2011. SeanPavonePhoto \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>The state Department of Environmental Conservation was also probing, and in a statement to the ABC affiliate, said based on doorbell video and the measurements taken at the site, the animal does appear to possibly be a mountain lion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDEC is actively investigating reports of a big cat in a Rochester neighborhood and determining if there is evidence to validate the images,\u201d the DEC said in its statement. \u201cAdditional information will be provided as it becomes available. DEC reminds the public to treat an encounter like any other with a large, potentially dangerous wild animal or unfamiliar dog.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeep a safe distance, and slowly back away.
