(Supplied: Great Southern Reef Foundation)<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Catastrophic event&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The scenes of ravaged marine life off the Yorke Peninsula are the latest in what Mr Andrews described as a &#8220;catastrophic event that&#8217;s occurring over such a huge part of the state&#8217;s coastal waters&#8221;.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;If this was happening on land \u2026 there would be really widespread uproar,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Andrews, founder of an education and research not-for-profit called Great Southern Reef Foundation, wanted the algal bloom to be declared a &#8220;national emergency&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A man in a surfer wetsuit carrying a large camera, light equipment and flippers while walking up step from the ocean\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/2a63866b4796c1384b5543c65c915a84\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Stefan Andrews does dives to investigate the impacts of algal bloom.\u00a0 (Supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The toxic bloom was first <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-03-25\/microalgae-identified-as-cause-of-bloom-linked-to-fish-deaths\/105091700\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">detected in March off the Fleurieu Peninsula<\/a> and has since <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-05-08\/size-of-sa-algal-bloom-revealed\/105264168\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">grown to a size comparable with Kangaroo Island.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Authorities estimate it has caused <a class=\"Link_link__kR0xA Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-05-24\/sa-algal-bloom-outbreak\/105300602\" data-component=\"Link\" data-uri=\"coremedia:\/\/article\/105300602\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tens of thousands of individual animals<\/a> to wash up dead on the state&#8217;s beaches.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The bloom has been detected along the Spencer Gulf, Kangaroo Island, the <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-06-04\/dead-marine-life-algae-bloom-found-in-coorong-sa\/105370710\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Coorong&#8217;s North Lagoon<\/a> and along the coastline from Victor Harbor to Robe.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">It&#8217;s also been picked up at Troubridge Point on Yorke Peninsula, more than 80km south of the Ardrossan jetty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Earlier this month, the bloom was <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-07-01\/toxic-algal-bloom-detected-at-west-lakes\/105481092\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">detected in metropolitan Adelaide at West Lakes and the Port River<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The bloom is considered non-toxic to humans, but can cause skin, eye and lung irritation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;We will see businesses shutting doors very shortly&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The Ardrossan footage was published online amid growing concerns about the impact of the bloom on SA&#8217;s fishing industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Calamari stocks along the Yorke Peninsula have been decimated ahead of breeding season, according to Michael Pennington, a commercial fisher based in Ardrossan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Pennington said he has not been able to fish for a month while other commercial fishers have been out of action for up to three months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;It&#8217;s pretty hard sitting at home on flat calm days where you should be at work and catching a few fish to put food on the table,&#8221; (Supplied)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Citing catch records filed with authorities, Mr Pennington said only 7 kilograms of calamari has been fished from Gulf St Vincent over the last four weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">In a normal year, this four-week period would typically yield between 9 and 12 tonnes, he said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve got no calamari here now and we&#8217;ve got no eggs, and all the bottom of the ocean is just completely destroyed and dead,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;So, next season, that&#8217;s just a complete write off.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;I honestly do not know how many years this could take to get a calamari fishery back in Gulf St Vincent \u2014 it&#8217;s pretty well non-existent now.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-05-25\/algal-bloom-harming-marine-life-is-now-hitting-livelihoods\/105324808\" data-component=\"FullBleedLink\" class=\"RelatedCard_link__rsgR9 FullBleedLink_root__lTw_U interactive_focusContext__yRhc_ interactive_defaults__AKxUU FullBleedLink_showVisited__g3Xvz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">An &#8216;ocean COVID&#8217; is choking sea businesses<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP RelatedCard_synopsis__cFwMW Typography_sizeMobile14__u7TGe Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Amid South Australia&#8217;s toxic algal bloom, Kangaroo Island tourism operators and fishers \u2014 both commercial and recreational \u2014 are among those on the frontline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Mr Pennington said he wants the bloom to be declared a national disaster &#8220;before it&#8217;s too late&#8221;.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"EmphasisedText_quote__TE6kn\"><p>&#8220;Because it&#8217;s not just the commercial fisherman that are affected \u2026 the tourism on the Yorke Peninsula now is like \u2014 I&#8217;ve never seen our town so quiet,&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>  he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;Tourism and fishing go hand in hand over here \u2026 that&#8217;s why people come to the Yorke Peninsula.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;We&#8217;ve got no help \u2026 and it&#8217;s getting to the point where we will see businesses shutting doors very shortly.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">The state government on Tuesday <a class=\"Link_link__5eL5m ScreenReaderOnly_srLinkHint__OysWz Link_showVisited__C1Fea Link_showFocus__ALyv2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-07-08\/fee-waiver-sa-fishers-affected-algal-bloom\/105506240\" data-component=\"Link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced a $500,000 initial relief package for fishers affected by the algal bloom<\/a>, allowing them to have certain licence and audit fees waived.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">Acting SA Premier Susan Close has left the door open to increasing the state government&#8217;s relief package.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph__iYReA\">&#8220;This is an unfolding challenge, so we&#8217;ve stepped in and offered immediate relief,&#8221;
