Their pitching, which had been so good for so long, was finally experiencing regression, leaving the offense needing to pick up the slack.

The Mets’ offense has been an enigma in 2025. The numbers, and underlying metrics, are quite strong, however, dire struggles with runners in scoring position has stunted the unit from becoming one of the best in baseball. Putting all that aside, a group of hitters who have gotten it done all season is the top of the order. And that was no different Saturday.

The Mets’ one through four in the lineup combined to go 10-for-18 with five homers, nine RBIs, and scored five runs. Brandon Nimmo and Juan Soto led the way, with two home runs each. Soto, specifically, had four of the groups’ 10 hits. Meanwhile, Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso both homered and had multi-hit games in their own right.

There is a legit argument for that foursome being one of the best in baseball. Lindor (.804 OPS) and Soto (.876 OPS) both have their season OPS figures over .800 and Alonso’s .953 mark is fifth-best in all the majors. Not to mention, Nimmo, who has his OPS up to .777, the highest it has been this season as he is finally getting the deserved results his underlying metrics have pointed to all season.

In addition to those four, and despite going hitless on Saturday, Jeff McNeil has had a fantastic season in his own right. Despite going 0-for-4 at the plate, the left-handed hitting McNeil has a .834 OPS. Pair him in with the aforementioned top four of Lindor, Nimmo, Soto, and Alonso, the Mets’ top five is easily among the best in the big leagues.

The real issue comes when you look past those top five. The last four hitters in the Mets’ lineup Saturday owned OPS figures of .675, .652, .658, and .595, respectively. Granted, given the right-handed pitcher on the mound, Starling Marte, who has quietly resurged quite nicely, is hitting .261 with a .751 OPS, was not featured in the lineup. The Mets certainly need Mark Vientos to come back healthy, and looking more like his 2024 self. As well as some more development out of a group that includes Brett Baty (.658 OPS), Francisco Alvarez (.652 OPS), and/or Ronny Mauricio (.639 OPS).

Regardless of the bottom-of-the-lineup issues, the Mets top five is as fearsome as any in the league, and that was once again shown on Saturday, as the team ended one of their longest losing streaks in recent memory.

The New York Mets were reeling entering Saturday night’s game.
