{"id":604404,"date":"2026-02-20T22:29:11","date_gmt":"2026-02-20T22:29:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/604404\/"},"modified":"2026-02-20T22:29:11","modified_gmt":"2026-02-20T22:29:11","slug":"liza-minnelli-claims-oscars-forced-her-to-use-wheelchair-with-lady-gaga","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/604404\/","title":{"rendered":"Liza Minnelli Claims Oscars Forced Her to Use Wheelchair With Lady Gaga"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/liza-minnelli\/\" id=\"auto-tag_liza-minnelli\" data-tag=\"liza-minnelli\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Liza Minnelli<\/a> lashes out at the <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/oscars\/\" id=\"auto-tag_oscars\" data-tag=\"oscars\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Oscars<\/a> in her new memoir, \u201cKids, Wait Till You Hear This!\u201d The \u201cCabaret\u201d icon presented the Academy Award for best picture alongside <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/lady-gaga\/\" id=\"auto-tag_lady-gaga\" data-tag=\"lady-gaga\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lady Gaga<\/a> at the 2022 Oscars, but Minnelli appeared somewhat disoriented on stage and stumbled over her words. Gaga notably comforted Minnelli in the moment by telling her, \u201cI got you.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tMinnelli was in a wheelchair at the time, which she alleges in her book was mandated by the Academy. She had expected to be seated in a director\u2019s chair where she could more easily see the teleprompter but plans changed at the last minute. The Academy reportedly pivoted to a wheelchair to prioritize Minnelli\u2019s safety.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI was inexplicably ordered \u2014 not even asked \u2014 to sit in a wheelchair or not appear at all,\u201d Minnelli writes. \u201cI was told it was because of my age, and for safety reasons, because I might slip out of the director\u2019s chair, which was bullshit. I will not be treated this way, I said. I was heartbroken. I was much lower down than I would have been in the director\u2019s chair. Now I couldn\u2019t easily read the teleprompter above me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cHow would you feel if you were wheeled out, against your will, to perform in front of a live audience, and unable to see clearly?\u201d Minnelli continues. \u201cSo when I stumbled over a few words, Gaga, who was at my side, didn\u2019t miss a beat to play the kindhearted hero for all the world to see. \u2018I got you,\u2019 she said, leaning down over me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tVariety has reached out to representatives for the Academy for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tMinnelli notes in her memoir that Gaga came to her dressing room when she heard about Minnelli\u2019s distress over being put in a wheelchair. Gaga asked, \u201cAre you okay?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI looked at her and said simply, \u2018I\u2019m a big fan,&#8217;\u201d Minnelli writes. \u201cI learned this lesson years ago from Mama and Papa. At a moment of high stress, you stay gracious. The winner for best picture that year was \u2018CODA.\u2019 I loved the irony of the title for me. Writing my memoir would be my coda, my truth.
