We\u2019ve begun testing in New York \u2014 be sure to give us a wave and snap a pic if you see us in the city,\u201d the post stated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HJXDWA3IK5EOPK6GKFINA7Q3CQ\">Waymo, which is owned by Google parent company Alphabet, has begun mapping out city streets with drivers remaining behind the wheel due to state restrictions, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/09\/us-news\/self-driving-robotaxi-service-waymo-launches-nyc-pilot-testing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/09\/us-news\/self-driving-robotaxi-service-waymo-launches-nyc-pilot-testing\/\">a report by the New York Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7XEQC3YFABBJBDMDWZZB75IRTA\">A spokesperson for the city Department of Transportation reportedly told the Post that Waymo submitted its DOT application in June.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"24CBLYNSQZDGDK4JIDVCSFRQ2I\">Until there is a change in the law, however, Waymo is unable to deploy its fully driverless fleet. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IQADJBMBCFGAJNLRXBKUTLFB2Q\">A couple of state bills introduced in January are currently \u201cstuck in committee,\u201d the Post reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"53ZLEVSVFRA4PFPCHZF3M4AG2Q\">One such <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/legislation\/bills\/2025\/S344\/amendment\/A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/legislation\/bills\/2025\/S344\/amendment\/A\">bill introduced in the state Senate<\/a> proposes the legalization of a fully autonomous vehicle to drive on New York roads without a human driver provided that \u201cthe automated driving system is engaged and the vehicle meets certain conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WCR4QF7YX5BXFPQMH4D3BSV4D4\">Until the law changes, testing is underway to map out the terrain of Brooklyn and Manhattan in an effort to improve Waymo\u2019s artificial intelligence, the report said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OKGBBCXZJFF2RGI544BTSOKO4A\">A company rep also clarified to the Post that the service won\u2019t be providing rides to the general public during this testing phase.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"O2SDF5WUZBGLNI25ZH56FALIK4\">\u201cThe data to date shows that Waymo outperforms human drivers, significantly reducing the frequency of injury-causing traffic collisions,\u201d the Waymo rep said in the report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"AA2P4GJ4ZVBLLORH4DZCBV3OCA\">Waymo already has driverless vehicles navigating a handful of other U.S. cities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PUMGINR4LJC2DLSHVGO7V3RXGU\">Through March 2025, Waymo vehicles have driven 71 million rider-only miles (no driver onboard). In tracking data, <a href=\"https:\/\/waymo.com\/safety\/impact\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/waymo.com\/safety\/impact\/\">Waymo claims its vehicles are safer than human operators<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2JGICJ5KJBGVNIQVUN7S6NXVOA\">In comparing its vehicles to the \u201caverage human driver\u2019 over the same distance in the operating cities, Waymo shared that it had 78% fewer injury-causing collisions and 93% fewer pedestrian collisions with injuries.<\/p>\n<p>If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
