Mayor Zohran Mamdani\u2019s effort to hold New York City\u2019s working and middle classes hostage unless Albany gives him his income-tax hike prompted horrified cries of \u201cIt\u2019s an election year!<\/a>\u201d from Democratic lawmakers \u2014 which tells you exactly what to expect once the election is safely over. <\/p>\n

Seriously: They may not fall for the mayor\u2019s property-tax-hike threat now, but history shows their true colors.<\/p>\n

Including Gov. Kathy Hochul, who has rejected Mamdani\u2019s hike for now, sputtering, \u201cI\u2019m the one who\u2019s trying to cut taxes.\u201d<\/p>\n

No one should forget 2024, when she made a huge deal of suspending the \u201ccongestion\u201d tolls <\/a>in Manhattan before that year\u2019s elections, only to bring them back afterward \u2014 even daring to claim she was saving New Yorkers money because she was \u201conly\u201d imposing a $9 hit (at first).<\/p>\n

We guess you can give Assemblyman Michael Benedetto (D-Bronx) some credit for honesty in saying on the record, \u201cI\u2019m not enthusiastic about raising taxes in an election year,\u201d but it really is a confession.<\/p>\n

Of course, plenty of state \u201cleaders\u201d like Speaker Carl Heastie are pretty much always in favor of tax hikes<\/a>, but pols who hem and haw in the months before Election Day aren\u2019t much better. <\/p>\n

After they win, it\u2019s gouge, gouge, gouge and gouge again.<\/p>\n

Will Mamdani follow through on his property-tax gambit? <\/p>\n

We\u2019ll see: City Council Speaker Julie Menin plainly opposes it, politely calling the mayor\u2019s ultimatum merely part of \u201cthe budget dance\u201d; perhaps Mamdani just wants to be able to blame to council for making the spending cuts needed to balance the budget.<\/a><\/p>\n

At the very least, he\u2019s proved that Democratic Socialists can lie just as well as regular Democrats: On the campaign trail, Zoh vowed to hike taxes only on the wealthy<\/a> \u2014 with no caveats about unless I really want more money to spend.<\/p>\n
