{"id":60966,"date":"2025-07-13T01:02:11","date_gmt":"2025-07-13T01:02:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/60966\/"},"modified":"2025-07-13T01:02:11","modified_gmt":"2025-07-13T01:02:11","slug":"hamilton-downtown-shooting-police-identify-victim","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/60966\/","title":{"rendered":"Hamilton downtown shooting: police identify victim"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hamilton police provide an update on a fatal shooting that killed an innocent bystander and release details about the suspect. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Belinda Sarkodie was on her way home after spending time with her friend in downtown Hamilton when she was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cp24.com\/local\/hamilton\/2025\/07\/12\/senseless-act-of-violence-woman-dead-man-in-hospital-after-shooting-in-downtown-hamilton\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.cp24.com\/local\/hamilton\/2025\/07\/12\/senseless-act-of-violence-woman-dead-man-in-hospital-after-shooting-in-downtown-hamilton\/\">shot and killed on Friday afternoon<\/a>, Hamilton police say.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cBased on the information we have so far, it appears Belinda was an innocent bystander simply going about her day,\u201d Det. Sgt. John Obrovac said during a news conference on Saturday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/1752368530_528_YAU7TFDNDNF7HHXOCMSG767U5Y.png\"  width=\"800\" height=\"449\"\/>Belinda Sarkodie Belinda Sarkodie, 26, was killed in a shooting in downtown Hamilton on Friday, July 11, 2025. (Hamilton Police Service handout) <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The shooting occurred at the corner of King Street East and James Street North, outside Jackson Square mall, shortly before 5:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Obrovac said officers encountered a \u201cchaotic\u201d scene when they arrived. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">They first found a male victim with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. Obrovac said the 26-year-old Sarkodie was located further down King Street East, suffering from a gunshot wound.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">She was pronounced dead at the scene, while the male victim was taken to hospital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Obrovac said the suspect, who fled the scene on foot, is described as a white male with a medium build and brown hair and was last seen wearing a black T-shirt with a white design on the front and a letter \u201cV\u201d on the back, blue shorts, dark socks, dark shoes, and a dark-coloured medical-style mask.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/1752368530_419_N4EMDFMHNNG3PJKN6LEMXNPQFA.png\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/>Hamilton shooting Police are on the scene of a fatal shooting in downtown Hamilton on Friday, July 11, 2025. (Jacob Estrin\/ CTV News) <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Investigators believe the male victim was the intended target, and may have been known to the suspect, Obrovac said, adding that the motive is still unknown.<\/p>\n<p>Victim immigrated to Canada from Ghana <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThere is no information to suggest that the suspect and Belinda Sarkodie were known to each other or that she was targeted,\u201d the detective said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cThere is nothing to suggest that she knew anybody involved,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Obrovac said Sarkodie moved to Canada from Ghana just last year. She was living and working in Hamilton.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cAt the time of the incident, she was spending time with a friend in the downtown core,\u201d Obrovac said. He noted that Sarkodie has a brother in Manitoba.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">When asked whether the male victim is co-operating with investigators, Obrovac said he has spoken to officers but has not been able to identify the shooter.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/VVVQUR2LFZGXFJJ7R6ACNTW5HU.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"600\"\/>Det. (Patrick Darrah\/CTV News) <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The detective was also asked for a comment about the Friday shooting being the second incident this year that left an innocent bystander dead. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cp24.com\/local\/hamilton\/2025\/04\/18\/had-her-whole-life-ahead-of-her-college-student-identified-as-victim-of-fatal-hamilton-shooting\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.cp24.com\/local\/hamilton\/2025\/04\/18\/had-her-whole-life-ahead-of-her-college-student-identified-as-victim-of-fatal-hamilton-shooting\/\">In April, a 21-year-old Mohawk College student<\/a> was caught in a crossfire and fatally shot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cAll I can tell you is that we are using every available resource to try to identify and locate the person involved, the suspect, and solve this obviously tragic crime,\u201d the detective said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Obrovac said officers continue to canvass for witnesses and surveillance video from the mall and nearby businesses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re still obviously in the early stages.
