Same with Steve Mills.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sean Marks\u2019 lifetime gig in Brooklyn notwithstanding, most top executives don\u2019t make it to a third hire.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the NBA, or any professional sports league for that matter, there\u2019s an order of blame that almost always goes like this:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First, it\u2019s the previous regime\u2019s fault: \u201cThis was a real mess.\u201d\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Second, it\u2019s the media\u2019s fault: \u201cYou guys don\u2019t know anything and don\u2019t understand patience.\u201d\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Third, the coach is blamed: \u201cWe could be better.\u201d\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Fourth, it falls on the front office: \u201cTime to start over.\u201d\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In firing Tom Thibodeau, the Knicks took the leap over No. 3 quicker than we anticipated. There wasn\u2019t a big public groundswell to can the coach, just as there wasn\u2019t a big groundswell <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/07\/08\/sports\/mike-brown-embracing-lofty-expectations-in-first-comments-as-knicks-coach\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to hire Mike Brown<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"LAS VEGAS \u2014 Phil Jackson got to fire one coach before he was gone.
