Asia-Pacific markets traded mixed Tuesday as investors weighed renewed tariff threats from U.S. President Donald Trump and concerns that artificial intelligence could disrupt software companies.<\/p>\n
Trump posted on Truth Social Monday that any country that wants to “play games” with the Supreme Court decision “will be met with a much higher tariff.”<\/p>\n
The comments followed a Supreme Court decision Friday<\/a> striking down tariffs enacted under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. In response, Trump said he would impose a 15% global tariff under Section 122 of the 1974 Trade Act. <\/p>\n Investors in Asia were also awaiting China’s loan prime rate decision. The one-year LPR serves as a benchmark for new commercial loans, while the five-year LPR guides property loans. <\/p>\n Markets in mainland China will reopen after the Lunar New Year holiday. Hong Kong Hang Seng index<\/a> futures stood at 26,869, below its previous close of 27,081.91.<\/p>\n South Korea’s Kospi<\/a> slipped 1.1%, reversing early gains in the session, while the small-cap Kosdaq added 0.16%.<\/p>\n Japan’s Nikkei 225<\/a> rose 0.77%, while the Topix was unchanged.<\/p>\n Australia’s\u00a0S&P\/ASX 200<\/a> also gave up early gains, falling 0.1%.<\/p>\n Overnight in the U.S., the\u00a0Dow Jones Industrial Average<\/a>\u00a0dropped 1.66%, while the\u00a0Nasdaq Composite<\/a>\u00a0declined 1.13%. The\u00a0S&P 500<\/a>\u00a0shed 1.04%.<\/p>\n Cybersecurity stocks dropped for a second day on Monday as investors fretted over new\u00a0artificial intelligence<\/a>\u00a0security tools that threaten to displace the sector’s\u00a0longstanding business models.<\/a><\/p>\n Anthropic<\/a>\u00a0on Friday debuted a\u00a0new security tool<\/a>\u00a0to its Claude model in a limited research preview. The AI lab said the service could scan software code for vulnerabilities and suggest solutions. Anthropic is scheduled to host an enterprise briefing with new product announcements on Tuesday.Samantha Subin<\/p>\n Software stocks<\/a>\u00a0such as\u00a0Microsoft<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0CrowdStrike<\/a>\u00a0were under pressure once again as AI disruption worries weighed on the market.
