The split is dead even at the domestic and <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/international-box-office\/\" id=\"auto-tag_international-box-office\" data-tag=\"international-box-office\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">international box office<\/a> with <strong>$30M<\/strong> each for the auteur-driven R-rated Sony horror movie. This is slightly above pre-weekend <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/06\/box-office-preview-28-years-later-elio-1236436173\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">projections<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe opening in 59 offshore markets is higher than recent auteur horror\u00a0Sinners\u00a0(+76%) and on par with\u00a0Nosferatu. It\u2019s bigger than horror franchise films\u00a0A Quiet Place:\u00a0Part II\u00a0(+13%),\u00a0Evil Dead Rise\u00a0(+24%) and\u00a0Smile 2\u00a0(+29%), all in like-for-like markets at current exchange rates.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tAmid a heatwave raging in the market, 28 Years Later stormed the <strong>UK<\/strong> at a No. 1 start of $6.4M. <strong>Mexico<\/strong> was the next best bow at $2.7M. The Middle East as a region launched with $1.8M. Other notable market totals include Australia ($1.7M), Korea ($1.5M), Germany ($1.3M), France ($1.3M) and Spain ($1.2M).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe other new opener this weekend, Pixar\/Disney\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/elio\/\" id=\"auto-tag_elio\" data-tag=\"elio\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Elio<\/a> did not meet expectations, lifting off with <strong>$35M<\/strong> global, of which a soft <strong>$14M<\/strong> was from 43 material overseas markets (80% of the footprint with China, Japan and Spain to come later). This is well below the pre-weekend projection despite positive audience and social reactions. Note that Elio, which skews young, opened into an international marketplace where kids\u2019 school holidays have largely not yet begun. Elemental opened into the same corridor in 2023, albeit on a more staggered release, and ended up continuing to build.\u00a0To create franchises, studios have to start somewhere \u2014 Disney has the top 3 original animated global openers post-pandemic in Elemental, Encanto and now Elio \u2014 but the latter didn\u2019t click out of the gate and will need to capitalize on holidays and a lack of new animated entries until Smurfs in mid-July (see Anthony\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/06\/box-office-28-years-later-elio-dragon-1236438207\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">deep dive<\/a> for more).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tElio scored its best overseas opening in <strong>Korea<\/strong>, where it jumped from No. 4 on Friday to No. 1 on Saturday and ended the frame with an estimated $1.8M at No. 1 for the frame. Behind Korea were <strong>Mexico<\/strong> ($1.4M), <strong>France<\/strong> ($1.3M), <strong>UK<\/strong> ($1.2M) and <strong>Italy<\/strong> ($800K).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tAs expected, the overall offshore and global weekend was again led by Universal\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/how-to-train-your-dragon\/\" id=\"auto-tag_how-to-train-your-dragon\" data-tag=\"how-to-train-your-dragon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">How to Train Your Dragon<\/a> which has fired up <strong>$358.2M<\/strong> worldwide from two sessions. The overseas total so far is <strong>$197.7M<\/strong>. In the sophomore frame, the live-action take on the beloved animated franchise\u2019s first entry added <strong>$53.6M<\/strong> in 81 markets for a 37% drop from opening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tExcluding China, the international cume is above\u00a0Sonic the Hedgehog 3,\u00a0HTTYD3\u00a0and\u00a0The Little Mermaid\u00a0at the same point.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe second weekend saw some strong holds including in Brazil (-13%), Australia (-28%), Germany (-28%), Netherlands (-32%), China (-32%), Korea (-33%) and Mexico (-38%). HTTYD remained the No. 1 movie in all markets save UK\/Ireland, China and Korea. Japan releases in September.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe Top 5 to date are <strong>Mexico<\/strong> ($24.5M), <strong>China<\/strong> ($23.2M), <strong>UK<\/strong> ($16.8M), <strong>Brazil<\/strong> ($12.6M) and <strong>Korea<\/strong> ($9.6M). The global Imax cume is $28.4M including $13M from international.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tTurning back to Disney, <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/lilo-stitch\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lilo &amp; Stitch<\/a> passed yet another milestone, crossing $900M now with <strong>$910.3M<\/strong> global through today. The 5th weekend surfed up another <strong>$19.7M<\/strong> (-39%) from 52 material offshore markets, taking the international cume to <strong>$523.6M<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tTops on this one are <strong>Mexico<\/strong> ($64.2M), <strong>UK<\/strong> ($46.3M), <strong>France<\/strong> ($37.1M), <strong>Brazil<\/strong> ($34.5M) and <strong>Germany<\/strong> ($29M).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tParamount\/Skydance\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/mission-impossible-the-final-reckoning-2\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mission: Impossible \u2013 The Final Reckoning<\/a>, also in its 5th weekend, has reached <strong>$540.9M<\/strong> global to date, after adding <strong>$12.8M<\/strong> from 66 overseas markets during the session.
