{"id":613154,"date":"2026-02-24T16:41:14","date_gmt":"2026-02-24T16:41:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/613154\/"},"modified":"2026-02-24T16:41:14","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T16:41:14","slug":"france-ups-the-ante-in-spat-with-us-ambassador-charles-kushner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/613154\/","title":{"rendered":"France ups the ante in spat with US ambassador, Charles Kushner"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By JOHN LEICESTER<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>PARIS (AP) \u2014 France\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/france-us-ambassador-kushner-far-right-0e10e3ec131969b1dea25a61cf0b00bc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">spat with the U.S. ambassador<\/a> to Paris took another turn Tuesday with the French foreign minister saying the top U.S. diplomat in France must respond to a summons and won\u2019t have access to French government officials until he complies.<\/p>\n<p>French authorities had summoned Ambassador <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/charles-kushner-france-donald-trump-d25e8932699142f7b594e19809c70d34\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Charles Kushner<\/a> \u2014 the father of U.S. President <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/donald-trump\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump<\/a> \u2019s son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner \u2014 for a meeting on Monday over comments from the Trump administration that France objected to. But Kushner did not show up, the foreign ministry said.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Embassy did not immediately respond to repeated requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking Tuesday, French Foreign Minister Jean-No\u00ebl Barrot described the failure to attend the meeting as \u201ca surprise\u201d that flew in the face of diplomatic protocol and will dent Charles Kushner\u2019s ability to serve as an ambassador.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will, naturally, affect his capacity to exercise his mission in our country,\u201d Barrot said, speaking to public broadcaster France Info.<\/p>\n<p>He said that Kushner \u201cis bringing difficulties on himself. Because for an ambassador to be able to do his job he needs access to members of the government. That\u2019s the basics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is nothing more usual than summoning an ambassador when explanations need to be made,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen these explanations have taken place, then the U.S. ambassador in France will, naturally, regain access to members of the French government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Embassy did not respond to an Associated Press request for comment on Monday before the planned meeting and follow-up requests on Tuesday also got no immediate reply.<\/p>\n<p>France\u2019s foreign ministry had summoned Kushner over Trump administration tweets relating to the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/france-farright-student-beating-macron-84620fcc1c5c6a3f810b1df5e9aa5362\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">beating death in France of a far-right activist<\/a>, Quentin Deranque. The 23-year-old student, described as a fervent nationalist, was beaten by a group of people earlier this month in the city of Lyon, in fighting that erupted between far-left and far-right activists. He later died of brain injuries.<\/p>\n<p>In a post last week on X, the State Department\u2019s Counterterrorism Bureau said \u201cviolent radical leftism is on the rise and its role in Quentin Deranque\u2019s death demonstrates the threat it poses to public safety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Embassy in Paris posted the same statement, in French.<\/p>\n<p>Barrot said France needs to discuss the comments with Kushner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must have an explanation with him,\u201d Barrot said. \u201cWe don\u2019t accept that foreign countries can come and interfere, invite themselves, into the national political debate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The foreign minister argued that the dust-up with Kushner should not hurt broader U.S.-France relations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot showing up is his personal responsibility,\u201d he said. \u201cIt does not affect the relationship between France and the United States in any way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last August, Paris also summoned Kushner over a letter he wrote to French President <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/emmanuel-macron\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Emmanuel Macron<\/a> alleging that France did not do enough to combat antisemitism.
