Today officials with the internet search company Google confirmed that the company will be bringing its high-speed fiber internet service to the Atlanta Market.<\/p>\n
The company is making the announcements\u00a0at its offices in Atlanta during a press conference. Decaturish.com<\/a> is attending and will update this story as more details become available.<\/p>\n Mayors and officials with Avondale Estates, Brookhaven, College Park, Decatur, East Point, Hapeville, Sandy Springs, Smyrna and Atlanta were in attendance.<\/p>\n Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed said, \u201cToday is one of the amost important moments in the life of the Atlanta metropolitan region.\u201d<\/p>\n Company officials said the build out of the fiber network would occur over the next couple of years.<\/p>\n The\u00a0company in February\u00a0announced<\/a> more than 30 \u201cpotential\u201d Google Fiber cities around the country, including Avondale Estates and Decatur.\u00a0The company says its service will be 100 times faster than average broadband speeds.<\/p>\n Google had said it would make an announcement about which cities would receive the service by the end of 2014, but in December postponed<\/a> that decision until after the holidays.<\/p>\n That February announcement led to a flurry of activity as\u00a0cities worked to complete Google\u2019s checklist<\/a>. All of the cities\u00a0met Google\u2019s May 1 deadline<\/a>, and the company said it would make its announcement by the end of 2014.<\/p>\n While everyone waited for that news,\u00a0AT&T announced its intentions to provide a gigabit internet service<\/a>, and Comcast announced it would be\u00a0expanding its 10 gigabit fiber network to businesses in the Atlanta Metro area<\/a>.<\/p>\n Over the weekend, media outlets reported that the company planned to bring its fiber service to cities in North Carolina, including\u00a0Charlotte, Raleigh, and Durham<\/a>.<\/p>\n This is a developing story.
