SAN ANTONIO \u2014 Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones is proposing a new voting commission to increase the city\u2019s voter participation.<\/p>\n
Mayor Jones announced on Wednesday she is proposing to establish the Mayor\u2019s Commission on Voting ahead of the Nation’s 250th birthday.<\/p>\n
As we approach the Nation\u2019s 250th birthday, it is important now more than ever that we are doing our part locally to create a more perfect union,\u201d said Mayor Jones. \u201cI look forward to working with City Council on the implementing ordinance and ensuring San Antonio residents are heard at the ballot box.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
If approved, the commission would comprise of three appointees chosen by the mayor and an appointee from each District. Mayor Jones said her goal is to have this in place by April 3.<\/p>\n
On Monday, the Bexar County Elections Department reported a nearly double surge in early voter participation for the 2026 Primary Election. <\/p>\n
70,912 ballots were cast within the first five days, marking a 48% increase from the 33,936 votes recorded in the first five days of the 2022 midterm primaries, according to the county elections department. <\/p>\n
\u201cVoters are showing up, and they are not slowing down,\u201d Elections Administrator Michele Carew said. \u201cWe\u2019re consistently seeing nearly double the daily turnout compared to the previous midterm election. Our goal is for every voter to feel confident that their vote is safe and secure.\u201d<\/p>\n
