(ABC New: Alistair Kroie)

In the 2025 financial year, $78 billion moved in and out of accounts as 3 per cent of members’ assets switched between regulated funds, according to data from the Conexus Institute.

Conexus estimated $40 billion of that switching involved a financial adviser.

“These competitive flows tend to be directed into funds designed to service financial advisers, most notably platforms,” it stated in a report.

“These numbers increased on FY2024, when we estimated adviser-led switching at $35 billion or 47 per cent of all switching.”

Calls for tighter regulation of industry

Mr O’Halloran said the other major reason people have been switching away from mainstream funds comes down to “inappropriate financial advice” that has moved Australians “out of decent super funds into much riskier options”.

“These switches are often expensive, setting people back over $10,000, charge higher ongoing fees and may see people end up in very risky investment options.”

Who pays when super funds collapse?

Who will end up paying First Guardian investors back their lost retirement savings?

He said in the worst examples, people have lost “entire super balances”.

The SMC highlighted the risks of higher fees, particularly for those with lower balances, with its analysis estimating that members who switched to platform-based funds and SMSFs faced over $160 million in extra fees and costs per year.

It found 70 per cent of those switching super funds did not have a pre-existing advice relationship with the person influencing the move.

The peak body suggested that this could mean people were being prompted by social media ads, lead generation or third-party influences, as opposed to a long-term financial planner.

Do you know more?
