{"id":617603,"date":"2026-02-26T13:38:15","date_gmt":"2026-02-26T13:38:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/617603\/"},"modified":"2026-02-26T13:38:15","modified_gmt":"2026-02-26T13:38:15","slug":"fort-worth-business-leaders-defend-state-takeover-say-stronger-schools-attract-employers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/617603\/","title":{"rendered":"Fort Worth business leaders defend state takeover, say stronger schools attract employers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Business leaders touted the state takeover of Fort Worth ISD as necessary during a panel  Wednesday, saying high-quality schools will fuel the city\u2019s economic growth by attracting employers and benefiting families. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">At the Build Your Fort Worth Workforce Summit hosted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fortworthchamber.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.fortworthchamber.com\/\">Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce<\/a> at Texas Wesleyan University, three business executives shared observations from a December visit to a Houston ISD elementary school. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/topic\/texas-education-agency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/topic\/texas-education-agency\/\">Texas Education Agency<\/a> announced it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/education\/2025\/10\/23\/a-big-distraction-fort-worth-parents-respond-to-state-takeover-with-dread-optimism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/education\/2025\/10\/23\/a-big-distraction-fort-worth-parents-respond-to-state-takeover-with-dread-optimism\/\">taking over Fort Worth ISD<\/a> last year, following consecutive years of failed ratings at a campus. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The takeover felt like a \u201cwake-up call,\u201d said Mike Coffey, president of Imperative Information Group, a company that conducts background checks. In a city that has earned high rankings in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/business\/2025\/08\/25\/fort-worth-tops-dallas-among-large-us-cities-for-economic-growth-report-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/business\/2025\/08\/25\/fort-worth-tops-dallas-among-large-us-cities-for-economic-growth-report-says\/\">economic success<\/a>, Coffey urged business leaders to play larger roles in local schools. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cIf the schools are bad, the employers won\u2019t come here,\u201d Coffey said. \u201cWe\u2019ll be left with just a low-performing community. The state has stepped in for reasons including fiscal mismanagement, cheating scandals and consistently failing academic performance at a campus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Houston ISD, the state\u2019s largest district, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/2023\/03\/15\/texas-announces-takeover-of-houston-schools-stirring-anger\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/2023\/03\/15\/texas-announces-takeover-of-houston-schools-stirring-anger\/\">went under state control in 2023<\/a>. The three business leaders spent a couple hours and observed about five classrooms at <a href=\"https:\/\/milne.houstonisd.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/milne.houstonisd.org\/\">Milne Elementary School<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Milne Elementary School, where 96% of students are economically disadvantaged, has seen jumps in its Texas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/education\/2025\/08\/15\/5-dallas-schools-see-a-f-grades-improve-after-district-asked-texas-to-rescore-staar-tests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/education\/2025\/08\/15\/5-dallas-schools-see-a-f-grades-improve-after-district-asked-texas-to-rescore-staar-tests\/\">A-F accountability grades<\/a>. In 2023, the school had an F rating, and in 2024, it received a B \u2014 just shy of earning an A. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The executives were impressed by what they saw during their visit: timed lessons, rubrics and engagement from students. They say that the curriculum leans too heavily on test preparation and scripted lesson plans, and they point to drops in teacher retention. In the 2024-25 school year, Houston ISD saw a teacher turnover rate of 32.2%, compared with the statewide average of 18.8%, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/news\/houston-texas\/education\/hisd\/article\/teacher-turnover-rate-tea-data-20815827.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.houstonchronicle.com\/news\/houston-texas\/education\/hisd\/article\/teacher-turnover-rate-tea-data-20815827.php\">the Houston Chronicle<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Some Fort Worth teachers, parents and students worry that Houston ISD\u2019s experience will foreshadow their own. They also say the district has improved in recent years. In 2024, the district had 31 F-rated campuses, and last year, it had 11.
