While it still gives priority to officials\u2019 children when reviewing applications, Wang said it felt as though even more pupils came from other backgrounds this year.<\/p>\n<p>With fewer children being born in China, the country\u2019s <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/china-economy\/article\/3284049\/thousands-chinese-kindergartens-close-falling-birth-rate-takes-its-toll?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">kindergartens are struggling<\/a> to find a path to survival. Solutions range from enrolling pupils from a wider range of backgrounds to offering other services that make use of teachers\u2019 skills.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">There were 253,300 kindergartens operating in China last year, down about 38,400 \u2013 or just over 13 per cent \u2013 from 2020.
