{"id":619062,"date":"2026-02-27T04:10:20","date_gmt":"2026-02-27T04:10:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/619062\/"},"modified":"2026-02-27T04:10:20","modified_gmt":"2026-02-27T04:10:20","slug":"france-abandons-plan-to-demand-albanese-resign-at-un-meeting-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/619062\/","title":{"rendered":"France abandons plan to demand Albanese resign at UN meeting \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>But the speech of France\u2019s Permanent Representative C\u00e9line Jurgensen <a href=\"https:\/\/hrc61session2026.sched.com\/event\/2EKv5\/item-1-high-level-segment-contd-general-segment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">at a meeting of the UNHRC<\/a> on Wednesday contained no such call for Albanese\u2019s resignation.<\/p>\n<p>Jurgensen only referred to \u201crepeated and extremely problematic statements by a United Nations Special Rapporteur,\u201d and called on special rapporteurs to \u201cexercise the restraint, moderation, and discretion required by their mandate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.diplomatie.gouv.fr\/fr\/les-ministres\/jean-noel-barrot\/interventions-a-l-assemblee-nationale-et-au-senat\/article\/propos-tenus-par-francesca-albanese-reponse-de-jean-noel-barrot-ministre-de-l\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">During his Feb. 11 speech<\/a> in France\u2019s National Assembly, however, Barrot had said that Albanese\u2019s \u201cprovocations call for only one response: her resignation. And it is in these terms and with this firmness \u2026 that France will speak \u2026 during the session of the United Nations Human Rights Council.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asked about the change in position, Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson Pascal Confavreux referred POLITICO to earlier comments by Barrot, and said that in the minister\u2019s view, \u201crepeated provocations from Mrs Albanese warranted for her to have the dignity to step down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Albanese is a controversial figure due to her outspoken comments against Israel\u2019s war against Hamas in Gaza, violence by Israeli settlers, and various other activities by the state of Israel which she frequently says amount to genocide. When announcing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/releases\/office-of-the-spokesperson\/2025\/07\/sanctioning-lawfare-that-targets-u-s-and-israeli-persons\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">U.S. sanctions<\/a> on Albanese, Secretary of State Marco Rubio accused her of displaying \u201copen contempt for the United States, Israel, and the West.<\/p>\n<p>Individual UN members have no formal way to force Albanese to resign before her term ends in 2028, short of a resolution in the Human Rights Council, which French and U.N. officials have said privately would be unlikely to pass.
