(Chester Gabrysiak\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1894:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-assassin-is-hanged-chic\/176425916\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Patrick Eugene Prendergast<\/a> was hanged for shooting and killing Chicago Mayor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/1988\/10\/09\/he-deserved-to-be-shot-said-the-mayors-assassin\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Carter Henry Harrison<\/a> on Oct. 28, 1893.<\/p>\n<p>Mirroring his father\u2019s political career, Carter Henry Harrison Jr. also served as Chicago\u2019s chief executive. Both former mayors are buried in Graceland Cemetery.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Parishioners from Doremus Congregational Church were heading home from their annual picnic at Momence on July 13, 1904, when the nine-car train they were riding in collided with a string of coal cars, which had broken loose from a freight train. Eighteen people were killed in the crash. (Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1904:<\/strong> A train full of children returning home from a Sunday school picnic was hit by a freight train in Glenwood in what is known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-twenty-six-die-in-a-trai\/176426829\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Picnic Wreck<\/a>. Eighteen were killed and scores were injured, most of them packed into the second and third cars. The toll was horrible, with some families suffering multiple deaths and injuries. Louisa Geringer, her 15-year-old stepson and 3-year-old daughter all died; a daughter and cousin were injured. Bridgeport, home of the Doremus Congregational Church, was hit hard by the tragedy.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Sen. (Chicago Tribune historical photo)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1912:<\/strong> U.S. Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2017\/12\/03\/how-william-lorimer-was-expelled-from-the-us-senate\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">William Lorimer<\/a> of Illinois was expelled from the U.S. Senate for election rigging following Tribune\u2019s reports of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/the-dishonor-roll\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">corruption<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"41UzVdzPdi\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2024\/07\/25\/vintage-chicago-tribune-summer-olympians-from-our-area-who-won-gold\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vintage Chicago Tribune: Summer Olympians from the area who won gold<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Also in 1912:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newspapers.com\/article\/the-omaha-daily-news-harry-hebner-wins-h\/163263885\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Harry Hebner<\/a>, who learned how to swim at a YMCA in Chicago, won a gold medal during the Olympics in Stockholm with a time of 1 minute, 21 seconds in the 100-meter backstroke. Not bad for a man who as a child thought he might be \u201ctoo heavy for swimming.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"bm4g9zjMfL\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/07\/06\/chicago-1995-heat-wave-30-year-anniversary\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">30 years after deadly Chicago heat wave, threats persist as climate change elevates risks<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>1995:<\/strong> The temperature hit <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-record-heat-leaves-every\/176428916\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">106 degrees<\/a> at Chicago\u2019s Midway Airport and hovered between the high 90s and low triple digits for the next five days. Dozens of bodies filled the Cook County medical examiner\u2019s office.
