Stephen Thompson has issued a statement following his controversial defeat at UFC Nashville. <\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2018Wonderboy\u2019 squared off against rising welterweight star Gabriel Bonfim<\/a> in Saturday night\u2019s co-main event. <\/p>\n

The 42-year-old MMA legend suffered a nasty cut to his shin after checking a kick in round two. <\/p>\n

After 15 minutes of action, Stephen Thompson<\/a> appeared to have done enough to get the win, but he ended up suffering a controversial defeat as two of the three cageside judges scored the fight 29-28 for Bonfim. <\/p>\n

A couple of hours after his latest fight, Thompson took to social media to speak to his fans. <\/p>\n

The former two-time welterweight title challenger was using crutches during his Instagram speech. <\/p>\n

\u201cFirst and foremost, I wanna thank all my fans for coming out,\u201d Thompson said. <\/p>\n

\u201cYour love and support was amazing out there tonight. I really do appreciate it. I\u2019m always grateful for the opportunity to perform in front of you guys. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve gotta get back, heal my shin up, and maybe do some more shin conditioning.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018Wonderboy\u2019 used the caption to expand on his message, he wrote: \u201cNashville, you are amazing!<\/p>\n

\u201cTo my fans, I love y\u2019all!! Thank you for your love and support always. Pops,\u00a0@raythompson, thank you for always being in my corner, love you! @westinwilson\u00a0,\u00a0@strainbjj\u00a0,\u00a0@reynolds_power32\u00a0& everyone at\u00a0@teampitchblack\u00a0&\u00a0@upstate_karate\u00a0thank you for all of your help for this fight camp. I felt great out there.<\/p>\n

Stephen Thompson targets UFC record <\/p>\n

Thompson is the oldest fighter currently on the roster, but he\u2019s shown no interest in retiring. <\/p>\n

In fact, he recently suggested that his MMA career may continue for at least five more years. <\/p>\n

Stephen Thompson is targeting Randy Couture<\/a>\u2018s record as the oldest UFC fighter, after watching \u2018The Natural\u2019 compete in the Octagon until he was 47 years old.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt would be cool to beat Randy Couture\u2019s record,\u201d he admitted ahead of UFC Nashville. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt would be cool, but I\u2019ve got two fights left, man, and we\u2019re gonna see them through, gonna honor them, and we\u2019ll go out there and win these next two fights in great fashion and see if we\u2019ll keep going. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt depends on what the UFC wants to do, for sure.
