{"id":62435,"date":"2025-07-13T14:26:11","date_gmt":"2025-07-13T14:26:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/62435\/"},"modified":"2025-07-13T14:26:11","modified_gmt":"2025-07-13T14:26:11","slug":"cannabis-use-is-linked-to-epigenetic-changes-scientists-discover-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/62435\/","title":{"rendered":"Cannabis Use Is Linked to Epigenetic Changes, Scientists Discover : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cannabis use may leave lasting fingerprints on the human body, a study of over 1,000 adults suggests \u2013 not in our DNA code itself, but in how that code is expressed.<\/p>\n<p>US researchers found it may cause changes in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/epigenetic-changes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">epigenome<\/a>, which acts like a set of switches that activate or deactivate genes involved in how our bodies function.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We observed associations between cumulative marijuana use and multiple epigenetic markers across time,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/news.feinberg.northwestern.edu\/2023\/07\/18\/marijuana-use-linked-to-epigenetic-changes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explained<\/a> epidemiologist Lifang Hou from Northwestern University <a href=\"https:\/\/news.feinberg.northwestern.edu\/2023\/07\/18\/marijuana-use-linked-to-epigenetic-changes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> when the research was published in 2023.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cannabis_(drug)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cannabis<\/a> is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/cannabis-use-is-rising-across-the-us-except-in-one-key-group\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">commonly used substance in the US<\/a>, with nearly half of Americans having tried it at least once, Hou and team report in their <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41380-023-02106-y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published paper<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/cannabis-can-leave-a-distinct-mark-on-your-dna-study-reveals?utm_source=SA_article&amp;utm_campaign=related_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cannabis Can Leave a Distinct Mark on Your DNA, Study Reveals<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some US states and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/australia-s-capital-just-legalised-recreational-marijuana-in-defiance-of-federal-laws\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">other countries<\/a> have made cannabis use legal, but we still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/a-new-discovery-helps-explain-how-cannabis-triggers-psychosis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">don&#8217;t fully understand<\/a> its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/male-cannabis-users-seem-to-show-less-cognitive-decline-study-finds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">effects on our health<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To investigate this, the researchers analyzed data from a long-running health study that had tracked around 1,000 adults over two decades.<\/p>\n<p>Participants, who were between 18 and 30 years old when the study began, were surveyed about their cannabis use over the years and gave blood samples at the 15- and 20-year marks.<\/p>\n<p>Using these blood samples from five years apart, Hou and her team looked at the  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/epigenetic-changes\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73027\" data-postid=\"167013\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">epigenetic changes<\/a>, specifically <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/DNA_methylation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DNA methylation<\/a> levels, of people who had used cannabis recently or for a long time.<\/p>\n<p>The addition or removal of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Methyl_group\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">methyl groups<\/a> from DNA is one of the most studied epigenetic modifications.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/StructureOfChromosomeDNAandMethylation_642.jpg\" alt=\"Diagram showing structure of our genetic molecules from chromosome to DNA including methylation\" width=\"642\" height=\"449\" class=\"size-full wp-image-137472\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>When epigenetic factors, which can come from other genes or the environment inside a cell or beyond, recruit a methyl group, it changes the expression of our genes. (ttsz\/iStock\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>Without changing the genomic sequence, DNA methylation affects how easily cells &#8216;read&#8217; and interpret genes, much like someone covering up key lines in your set of instructions.<\/p>\n<p>Environmental and lifestyle factors can trigger these methylation changes, which can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/heres-how-events-in-your-grandparents-lives-could-affect-your-genes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">passed to future generations<\/a>, and blood <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Biomarker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">biomarkers<\/a> can provide information about both recent and historical exposures.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We previously identified associations between marijuana use and the aging process as captured through DNA methylation,&#8221; Hou <a href=\"https:\/\/news.feinberg.northwestern.edu\/2023\/07\/18\/marijuana-use-linked-to-epigenetic-changes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We wanted to further explore whether specific epigenetic factors were associated with marijuana and whether these factors are related to health outcomes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/MultipleGenerationsFamily642.jpg\" alt=\"A family of humans\" width=\"642\" height=\"429\" class=\"size-full wp-image-145404\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Environmental and lifestyle factors can trigger methylation changes, which can be passed to future generations. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canva.com\/photos\/MADYNemcmnI\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Monkey Business Images\/Canva<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>The comprehensive data on the participants&#8217; cannabis use allowed the researchers to estimate cumulative use over time as well as recent use and compare it with DNA methylation markers in their blood for analysis.<\/p>\n<p>They found numerous DNA methylation markers in the 15-year blood samples, 22 that were associated with recent use, and 31 associated with cumulative cannabis use.<\/p>\n<p>In the samples taken at the 20-year point, they identified 132 markers linked to recent use and 16 linked to cumulative use.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/CannabisPlantWithPurplishFlowers_642.jpg\" alt=\"Cannabis plant with its purple flowers\" width=\"642\" height=\"428\" class=\"wp-image-137462 size-full\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The buds of a cannabis plant contain the most cannabinoids. (<a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/photos\/pink-and-green-petaled-flower-t9jQie6cUhg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Esteban L\u00f3pez\/Unsplash<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Interestingly, we consistently identified one marker that has previously been associated with tobacco use,&#8221; Hou <a href=\"https:\/\/news.feinberg.northwestern.edu\/2023\/07\/18\/marijuana-use-linked-to-epigenetic-changes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explained<\/a>, &#8220;suggesting a potential shared epigenetic regulation between tobacco and marijuana use.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Multiple epigenetic changes associated with cannabis use had previously been linked to things like <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cell_proliferation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cellular proliferation<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mycancergenome.org\/content\/pathways\/hormone-signaling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hormone signaling<\/a>, infections, neurological disorders like  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/schizophrenia\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73022\" data-postid=\"167013\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">schizophrenia<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/bipolar-disorder\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20355955\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bipolar disorder<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Substance_use_disorder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">substance use disorders<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s important to note that this study doesn&#8217;t prove that cannabis directly causes these changes or causes health problems.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This research has provided novel insights into the association between marijuana use and epigenetic factors,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/news.feinberg.northwestern.edu\/2023\/07\/18\/marijuana-use-linked-to-epigenetic-changes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said <\/a>epidemiologist Drew Nannini from Northwestern University.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Additional studies are needed to determine whether these associations are consistently observed in different populations.
