{"id":625748,"date":"2026-03-02T01:00:16","date_gmt":"2026-03-02T01:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/625748\/"},"modified":"2026-03-02T01:00:16","modified_gmt":"2026-03-02T01:00:16","slug":"bacteria-play-previously-unknown-role-in-kidney-stones-study-finds-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/625748\/","title":{"rendered":"Bacteria Play Previously Unknown Role in Kidney Stones, Study Finds : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kidney stones have plagued humans <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/s00467-008-0960-5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">since antiquity<\/a>, yet despite our long history with them, we&#8217;ve apparently overlooked a key detail about the most common type, a new study finds.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers in the US found live bacteria and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/bacterial-biofilms-have-memory-that-works-in-a-surprisingly-similar-way-to-neurons\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">biofilms<\/a> inside calcium oxalate kidney stones. These are the most common type of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/this-roller-coaster-could-help-people-pass-kidney-stones\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">kidney stone<\/a>, accounting for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2673-4397\/5\/1\/6\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">nearly 80 percent<\/a> of all cases, and were \u2013 until now \u2013 thought to be wholly made of minerals crystallized from salts in urine.<\/p>\n<p>According to the new study, however, bacteria were not only present in these kidney stones, but may play a role in their formation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This breakthrough challenges the long\u2011held assumption that these stones develop solely through chemical and physical processes, and instead shows that bacteria can reside inside stones and may actively contribute to their formation,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uclahealth.org\/news\/release\/researchers-discover-previously-unknown-bacterial-component\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> urologist Kymora Scotland, of the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;By uncovering this novel mechanism, the study opens the door to new therapeutic strategies that target the microbial environment of kidney stones.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Kidney stones can bring excruciating pain, and while they are not typically dangerous if treated, they can lead to serious <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niddk.nih.gov\/health-information\/urologic-diseases\/kidney-stones\/definition-facts#complications\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">complications<\/a>, especially without appropriate medical care.<\/p>\n<p>Bacteria are known to play a role in the formation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyfund.org\/all-about-kidneys\/other-kidney-problems\/kidney-stones#what-are-the-different-types-of-kidney-stones\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">struvite kidney stones<\/a>, which are relatively rare, accounting for <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1080\/21681805.2019.1606031\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2-6 percent of cases<\/a>. Medical science has found some ways to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/kidney-stones\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">inhibit this process<\/a>, but we still don&#8217;t fully understand how it works.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Crystal nucleation and growth is a complex process, with many factors capable of functioning as both promoters or inhibitors depending on the exact environmental situation and physical characteristics of the molecule,&#8221; the researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1073\/pnas.2517066123\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">write<\/a> in their published paper.<\/p>\n<p>Using electron and fluorescence microscopy, the team didn&#8217;t just detect a few bacteria clinging to the exterior of calcium kidney stones \u2013 they discovered live bacteria and even biofilms embedded within the crystals that comprise the stones.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/pnas.2517066123fig03-642x321.jpg\" alt=\"Bacterial Kidney Stones\" width=\"642\" height=\"321\" class=\"wp-image-190450 size-medium\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Bacterial-biofilm components (false-colored yellow) identified within kidney stones. Scotland <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uclahealth.org\/news\/release\/researchers-discover-previously-unknown-bacterial-component\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These results may also help to explain the connections between recurrent urinary tract infections and recurrent kidney stone formation, and provide insights on potential future treatment for these conditions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The findings suggest bacteria may help seed kidney stones, then get trapped in the resulting structure as crystals aggregate around them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/newsletter?utm_source=promo_generic_health\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Generic-Health-Promo-Final-642x273.jpg\" alt=\"Subscribe to ScienceAlert's free fact-checked newsletter\" width=\"642\" height=\"273\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-182810 size-medium\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1073\/pnas.2517066123\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">suggest<\/a> kidney stones should be thought of as an &#8220;organic\u2013inorganic biocomposite&#8221;, where bacterial biofilms make up a key part of the kidney stone, even in cases when conventional clinical testing indicates no bacterial presence.<\/p>\n<p>While the new study focused on calcium kidney stones, the origins of other types remain poorly understood \u2013 and bacteria may play overlooked roles in those stones, too.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/breakthrough-scientists-created-a-universal-kidney-to-match-any-blood-type\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Breakthrough: Scientists Created a &#8216;Universal&#8217; Kidney To Match Any Blood Type<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is a revelatory finding about a common health problem that affects <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.eclinm.2024.102924\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tens of millions of people<\/a> worldwide, but more research will be needed to clarify the role bacteria play in the formation of kidney stones, the researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1073\/pnas.2517066123\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">note<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our multi-institutional team is currently performing studies to determine how bacteria and calcium-based kidney stones interact,&#8221;
